Windows dock won't hide when I want it to

So, I have auto hide dock on.
This is a nice setting and allows me to utilise 100% of the space on my monitor.
There is however a problem with this, any time I get a notification on the task bar the dock comes back and won't hide, blocking me from seeing the top of applications and closing them and stuff(since I have the dock on the top of the screen).

This isn't annoying per se, but when an application has a notification without bringing up a balloon or other notification then the windows dock stays unhidden and it is impossible to stop unless I close pretty much all applications and start them again(Which is again, annoying since I have work and other stuff that I would rather get on with).
This is really annoying and I can't see a setting anywhere to stop the taskbar from popping back up when I get notifications.

I would rather have it so that it only pops up when I hover over it, is there anything I can do to stop this from happening?
By the way I have a modified desktop environment, but all the core functionality of the desktop is still Windows.

I wonder if it would come to its senses if you move the taskbar to some other side and back to top.

Or if you uncheck-apply then re-check-apply the auto-hide feature?

Both would be workarounds instead of a solution but better than restarting all applications.

Hmm, I haven't tried moving it around before. I have tried unchecking and rechecking the auto hide feature, and sometimes it does work. I doubt moving it around would do much, probably the same as unchecking and rechecking the feature.

I believe it is a problem with whichever application it is is supposed to be displaying the notification, but I haven't been able to find out which one causes this glitch, in fact it may even be windows itself.

If only I could disable it popping up when notifications happen. Thanks for the suggestion though.
