How to properly open and edit Resource Hacker BMP images?

I've extracted a few bmp images from a .dll for editing themes. The image is supposed to have transparency but is showing up as black and white on photoshop, gimp, paintnet and image viewers like irfanview. Windows thumbnails and preview panel is somehow reading it properly. What is the proper way to open BMPs with transparency?

    Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
Mainly because it's an alpha channel being used,
See this and some of the follow up videos on the right column,

So I knew about the alpha channel but had no idea why I couldn't anything to read it right. Turns out I'd been using the wrong software. Ended up using pixelformer which did the trick.
