ShellFolderFix - Manage folder window positions/size

Great app! Kindly add an option to automatically "Restore Desktop Icons" at startup. (This always has to be done manually at login).

Try refresh!

Not sure what you mean by "Restore your shortcuts", but if it's what I think you mean, try right-clicking the Desktop and selecting "refresh" after you move icons to where you want them. Then the system will remember where you put them and put them back there at next boot.

Yes Well

Raymond, thank you for that article explaining what went wrong since XP. I would comment to the Windows team, that if the programmers of Apple Macintosh system 7 (the old OS before X) could get this perfectly right, with a nice clean, perfectly working size, position, and viewing preference that saved perfectly and immediately, working much better than even XP, and that OS programming accomplished in 1993 or earlier, yet with that nice, clean, pleasant to use interface the system on the whole was much less stable than Windows: HOW IS IT MICROSOFT FAILS TO REALIZE THIS HUGE UNPLEASANT TO USE PAIN IN THE ASS, AND WHY CANNOT THEY FIX IT TO BE AT LEAST AS COMPETENT AS APPLE OS WAS FIFTEEN YEARS AGO?!

I mean this is why people even seriously consider buying an Apple computer rather than a Windows running machine. Microsoft, humble yourself, go buy an old Mac on eBay to see how nice it works, take note of the little details, match it in an update for Windows 7, and get it done.

Cheers,

Agreed. What version Mac had the double-click title bar roll up feature? I loved that.

Works in Windows 8!

Hi Georg,

I just wanted to let you know the program works in the Windows 8 Developer Preview! I've been experimenting.

I think that says something about just how well you coded ShellFolderFix.

...are you telling us Microsoft STILL hasn't made this utterly essential app obsolete?!! :banghead:

Hi,
I’m curently using this software. The workspaces are great for me. It appears there is a workspace limit of 16? I need more, any tips?

is there any plan to add the option of having 'workspaces' open _in addition to the folders already open_, rather than closing all open windows so that only the workspace folders are open?

Q: My view layout and view mode settings are not properly restored for folders, is something wrong?
A:
No, it works as it should. Currently ShellFolderFix does not affect view layout/mode, even though I'd like to add support for it in future if possible. Only window position and size are affected/restored.
.

By view layout and view mode settings, are you are refering to a window's maximized state and monitor location? If so, this is not extremely clear to potential downloaders / users. To clarify, the application does not save the monitor location of maximized windows. I almost strictly use maximized windows and use keyboard hotkeys to switch monitors. This application is not useful for this particular window organization / usage mode. Pressing the restore down (middle titlebar button) will allow the window to move to the last saved location. Hopefully this will either save a user from the time to install the program or preferably, prompt future support for this.

Firstly I would like to thank you for producing such an excellent piece of software.

The fact that MS thinks that I would want to re size every folder when I open it so that I can access it properly is absolutely mind-blowing. Do they not use their own operating system?

I was wondering if anyone else has been having problems with SFFix in the last few days? I have been using it since April and just a few days ago it stop functioning and I am pulling my hair out just trying to get my regular work done.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled.

I have deleted the SFF folder and reinstalled.

I have done a system restore to September 5th and reinstalled.

It is running right now but not remembering any window position or size.

I have not installed any new software or changed my antivirus.

I would appreciate any suggestions that you any have.

One strange piece of info is that "Windows Manager" does not work on my system either...... I tried it out of desperation!

not me. (I've just started using the workspaces feature, too, and it's all terrific.

the only Windows Explorer problem I've ever had is a folder that when opened from a shortcut freezes up _some times_ after a 'group by' setting had been applied. ...I don't know if that's because programs are competing to apply their settings to the window and it all just becomes a tangled mess, or if it's only a problem on Microsoft's side or something.)

Does any one where one is supposed to complain to MS about this issue??

I know that it will probably be equivalent to spitting in the ocean but at least I would feel a little better.....

Thanks....

Yes, me too. Mine stopped working this morning. Then I found your post. Worked fine yesterday. Today, all of a sudden, it doesn't. I didn't install anything, uninstall anything, or do any updates.

EDIT - Mine just started working now. No idea why. I even re-booted twice since and it works perfect now. Didn't even lose any of my settings. Strange.

 My situation is similar. After months of use, my SFF v.1.1.3 suddenly stopped saving any new workspaces, but I can still restore previously saved ones. I downloaded and installed the latest 64-bit version (1.1.4) with no luck. Can anyone help? Thanks

UPDATE: Tried re-booting, reloading various times with no success. After 3 days, I uninstalled everything, including databases (unfortunately lost all previous workspaces). Rebooted. I found it strange that 2 other users "suddenly" had my same problem, at about the same time, so I changed the date on my system to an earlier date. Don't know if that had any bearing on the positive result. I installed the 1.1.4 ShellFolderFixSetup.exe file and Renamed the default install folder by adding the version number 1.1.4. I changed the date back, and everything works fine. At least for now!

Does anyone know if this program needs the page file to work? I just started working on my re-install to an ssd. Got a few programs on it so far, including this. But it won't work. Only main difference I can think of between my current install and the W7 install on my ssd. Could that be it?

I am running on an SSD also but SFF worked fine for me for months.

I love this program so much that I have no qualms about manually starting it each morning.

I am running three 22" monitors so I REALLY need my folders to open where I left them.

I have tried various start-up routines and used the delayed start supplied with the program but whenever it starts automatically it does not recognize any open folders. If I start it manually after every thing has settled down it works perfectly.

I ran into this problem with AutoHotKey.... I would write these beautiful sleek scripts then have to add a bunch of "SLEEP. 500" to slow them down so they would run properly. 8GB of RAM hooked up to a 120GB SSD means that normal sloths like Quickbooks and Photoshop open in two seconds not TWENTY!

I am going to try and install SFF on my secondary drive so it has a few extra milliseconds to find what it needs to load AND work!

I still think that Tweaker should accept donations........

Sincerely From,
KeyWestFlorida
