Fonts- Show/Hide options?

I was playing with the Font Panel in Control Panel. There is a Font Settings option which goes to a page allowing hiding or showing fonts based on language. If you do this, make sure to see what fonts are currently available on your system in Word or IE or wherever you have a font selection.

I unchecked the HIDE option and I believe more fonts showed up in the panel. I rechecked the HIDE option but they did not go away. The other language fonts do show as greyed out and Show/Hide indicates Hide, but they are still available in Word and IE. Is this the way it is supposed to work?

I am a little uncertain here, since I don't know for sure what was available prior to unchecking the hide option for the fonts.

I did try typing something in Word, and although it would initially allow me to choose a foreigh language font, it immediately reverted back to the default.
