possible to customize text/size font of apps?

Hi, just swiched to windows7 loving it soo far but just 1 tiny thing is bit annoying,

atm i have just a crap 17" (not WS) TFT, and win7 only displays it properly on its native res, 1280x1024 now this makes everything way too small, so DPI change to %125 fixed that, and made internet explorer look fine too, however other applications like.. mirc, ftp clients etc all just appear to be way to small, i can increase font size in these apps but it looks awfull!
is there anyway to change zoom or size or something in these apps without editing the font size? if not plz recommend me a good size of TFT that is widescreen and displays all things perfectly :)

I'm not familiar with US market prices, I'll let someone else tell you your options...

Rejiggering all your apps would've proven impossible, but I must admit I'm very happy with the 1680 x 1050 resolution I get from the monitors in my sys' specs'...

Stretching to this would make a difference... keeps you well clear of nasty TN panels...
