Windows 7: Sort Start Menu

Sort Start Menu

I wanted to rearrange my start menu so I right clicked the Windows button -> "Start Menu" tab -> Customize -> unchecked "Sort All Programs menu by name"

Then I went to the start menu and drag and dropped the icons to my liking. Now they have been re-alphabetized!

Was there something else I missed? I have made sure that check box is still unchecked, which it is.

Edit: I think restarting the machine might cause it. But why?

I don't know about your method, but you might get something more to your liking if you created a nested folder structure to contain your start menu items. That way you create categories and subcategories so that you can navigate to any program quickly and easily.

I'm in the same boat. I custom sorted my stuff and if you wait long enough (couple hours) it will resort itself by name again. Not what I want.

keep in mind while the nested folders is great, personally thats what i do to, it's best to do it before you start installing your software. not a big deal either way but sometimes an uninstalled program will still show up in your start menu until removed manually.

Permanently Add to 'Sort By' Menu
I'm sick of having to often click Sort By>More>Date Modified. I want "Date Modified" to always be an option on every 'Sort By' menu. But I don't want to automatically set all folders to look any particular way, I just want the option in the menu.

sort start menu download menu by date not name
The win 7 start menu download folder item on the right sorts by name. This is very annoying. I cannot find a download unless I know its name. If by date I just look up a recent download at top of list. How do I change behavior so downloads in start menu (right column) sorts by date? NB. I...

How do I sort Start Menu items?
I would like to have all my Start Menu items (pinned and recently used) always be listed alphabetically. I know and use the setting for "All Programs" but what about the Start Menu itself? How can I set it so that it displays the items sorted? Thanks!

Can't drag items pinned on the start menu to sort them
On build 7000, I could do this. But now everytime I try to drag a pinned item to move it to the top (I like to keep my stuff alphabetically ordered), it just gives me the option to open it with whatever else I'm holding it over. Anyone else notice this and/or know a way around this nonsense?...
