    Customizing Devices and Printers icons

I want to be able to customize icons that appear in Devices and Printers. I also want to hide or reclassify some of the items appearing there.

I want to customize how icons appear without modifying the DDores.dll which holds all the generic device images. I am well aware of changing devices and printers Icons.. thread. Devices and Printers can download images for some of the devices. Where are those saved? How can I make use of this for the devices that do not get a download?

Also I have a Sidewinder Strategic Commander. This device is somewhat ancient but works fine (installing it is a bit tricky). This device appears as an "unspecified" device. I'd prefer to recategorize it as a gaming/input device.

Also the same device appears twice in Devices and Printers once as "Microsoft Sidewinder Strategic Commander" and second as a virtual "HID Keyboard Device". It is the same device so I wish it to appear once.

    Hi Cat...

I'm in the same boat... Ive read several threads here on the topic but all so far are cryptic and/or incomplete.

Does anyone know how or where a tutorial is on changing the default icons in the Devices and Printers area? I'd like to change the BORING Computer icon to one thats an image of my actual PC... ?????

The only way i know is to open a .dll ,Sorry

Use Resource hacker or Restorator to open up a .dll and change the Icons contained inside it.

The only way is to hack a core DLL of all default icons. In other words if you connect another keyboard they will both have the same icon.

Hi White Cat, I also have the strategic commander but I can not get it to work on my win 7 - 64bit. Could you tell me what you did to get it to function on your system? I have used this for 6yrs on XP and Vista and can not get use to playing any games without it.

    Thanks Steve

    64bit

Hardware will need new drivers for 64bit.

What I did was trick the computer into using drivers for 32bit win7. Nothing you can do for 64bit... Unless...

Bandare at Sidewinder Strategic Commander problems - Page 12 - Vista Forums claims this fixed his problem.

Let us know if it really works. :)

    Hi

I wrote a tutorial on how to customize the "Device and Printers" icons on Windows 7 without hacking the DLLs.
    It is easy but long.
