How to Downgrade Windows Media Player 12 to WMP 11 on Windows 7

Edit: Ok - after much effort - I finally reverted the changes.

No combination of restoring method worked for me. I did sfc/scannow, I uninstalled and reinstalled WMP, and did a system restore to the most recent restore point. The problem is that if you are having issues getting this to work, you most likely have tried it multiple times - creating multiple restore points, (duh...). Don't know why it took me so long to figure that out, since the restore didn't do anything. So I went back as far as I could see without me messing with the media player changes, and that fixed everything.

I don't recommend even trying this if you are running the most recent Win7 build (7600.something) or if you are running 64 bit. Even if you place the files in the SysWOW64 folder - it won't do any good. In fact I'd be surprised if this worked for anyone, so I highly recommend not even attempting unless you're sure you can restore everything properly and are willing to waste several hours of your time.

can someone help me to get Task Manager to work again, the DOS window that comes up says something about ownership before it closes.

i really want to be able to see "all processes from all users" because something keeps stealing 50% CPU.

I have been able to grab a print screen of the DOS window that comes up when i try "view all processes by all users" with Task Manager.

SUCCESS: The file (or folder): "C:\Windows\system32\taskmgr.exe" now owned by user "my user account"
processed file: C:\Windows\system32\taskmgr.exe
Successfully processed 1 files; Failed processing 0 files

after this is displayed my Task Manager does not restart showing all the processes. What can i do to get it to work again, do i have to give back ownership of the exe?

I've been successfull getting wmp11 on 7 both 32bit and 64bit. However, the only issue that still exists is selecting multiple files to open. When I do this, only ONE file will add to the playlist. I've tried an array of file types but only ONE file will open no matter how many I select and hit enter, or open, or play, just ONE file shows up in the playlist. Naturally it does open any media file just fine, but only ONE at a time. Anyone have some ideas on how to fix that?

Warning about the download suggested

Just a quick note to warn people that the download suggested to gain the Windows Media Player 11 installer for Windows 7 contains a Key Logger spyware trojan.

I'd advise only downloading installers for Microsoft products from an officially supported site for Microsoft, not from the third party site the link gives you.

Regards,

Javalad

I just like the feel of windows media player 11 better than media player 12, WMP 11 has more features too

Hello, I have downgraded and I have fixed the registry so now when I double click an mp3 the "server execution" error doesn't show. But another pop up occurs. "Windows media player is not installed properly and needs to be reinstalled".
What do I do?

would this fix work in windows8???

I amo having problems with windows media player 12 in windows 8, and i think this downgrade would fix my problem. i need to use wmp because i have a program that uses it as a host, the problem is that it is imposible to use it to play dvd´s and that is exactly what i need. i already tried a lot of codec packs and still nothing... i am wondering if this fix, i mean, downgrading to wmp 11 would fix the problem... i use wmp11 in other computer and it works fine.... Help!!!

First ,welcome to SevenForums.

Second, we have EightForums for everything about Windows 8.

And finally, about Your problem: You have to install Windows Media Center in Windows 8 to be able to play dvd's in Windows 8.
This downgrade doesn't work in Windows 8 anymore.

You can get your key for Windows 8 Media Center Pack for free here.
Only thing is, You will have to be patient and wait up to 72 hours for that key.

thsnk you Kizo2703, but that does not fix my problem

The issue that i have is that i use an especific program for biofeedback, it is a therapy that uses dvd´s to help the patient (i dont want to go to details on this) that program uses WMP as a host to play the dvd´s

I already have windows media center, i can play dvd´s on the computer, that works fine, but the program uses windows media player, so i need to have a windows media player that plays dvd´s, that´s why i thougth that maybe downgrading it would work... the other possibility that i have think of is to make the program use another program as a host, but i have no idea on how to do that....

Without more specific data, I can't help You.

But, ask a question on EightForums, you may find someone who can help You there.

But, it's odd when You say You can't play dvd's ,because when You install Media Center in Windows 8, there is no difference between WMP in Windows 7 and 8.
