Windows 7 changed name on "shortcut to..."

    Panic!!

I don't know if this problem is just for the Swedish market or all markets...

I work for a company that sells air conditioning units. On our network we have a folder with several hundred of subfolders containing documentation for all the units. If a document can be used for more than one machine, the pdf-file is placed in a main folder, and I create shortcuts to that pdf in the appropriate folders.

When I had XP a file that was a shortcut was automatically named
    Genväg till xxxxx.pdf

Now when I create a shortcut it is named:
    xxxxxx.pdf - genväg

I have several thousand shortcuts named in XP. They are easy to see as they all are together (at G in alphabetical order). So now I have to manually re-name all the shortcuts I am creating!! PANIC! The Windows 7 version is not an option, too easy to miss it's a shortcut (people mailing shortcuts to customers are not popular....).

What were they thinking of??? Is there a way that I can tell Windows 7 to please continue to name my shortcuts as before? Or do I have to use my valuable time with renaming files when I make the shortcuts? Seems unnecessary!

Please if somebody could help me!

    Hello Zitalena,

    Welcome to Seven Forums.

Saw this Introduction - Bulk Rename Utility on the FREE Great Programs for Windows 7 page. Might be just what your looking for. Looks more complicated than it really is. There's a tutorial there and such.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded and installed the program, looked scary. Read the pdf a bit and started to experiment. The thing is, it doesn't like shortcuts...

    If I drag a file into the window, it's named XXXX.pdf - genväg.lnk
When I try to remove the last 13 characters, it leaves .lnk and crops .pdf instead.
When I try to remove - genväg.lnk it leaves .lnk and removes the rest.

If I instead try to open the file from the menu, only regular files are opened, not the shortcuts, they just don't show in the window.

I will look into it more later, but I am still wondering if there isn't a setting in Windows that fixes this. The shortcuts has been named the same way since I started using a computer with Windows 3 (at least I think so), and it seems very strange that they are changing it now!!

EDIT: Off course .lnk should still be there.... stupid me. OK. It works, but I will have to do it almost file by file as they are in so many folders. But still easier than doing it by hand. Thanks again!

You only want to remove the last 9-10 characters. The .lnk doesn't count since that is the extension. If you can only drag and drop, then maybe a search in windows explorer for *.lnk files in the parent of all these folders will give to a place from which you can drag and drop groups of files at one time. Just a thought.
