windows 7 taskbar thumbnail previews missing?

    Hi All,

I have noticed that if I open 10 internet explorers or a mixture of 10 different programs; when you hover over their taskbar icon displays a preview pane as normal, but as soon as I open 11 or more programs or internet explorers the previews turn in line discription bars (the images change into writings only) if this makes sense.

    Question:

Is there any way that after 10 programs open the image previews can stay?

If I close down some programs or internet explorer tabs, down to 10 or less, the previews (images) come back.

Hope I explined the above properly?

Hello John, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Yes. This is the taskbar's thumbnail and list mode threshold limit. You could use a option in the tutorial below to change the limit to what you would like instead. :)

Taskbar List or Thumbnail Previews Mode - Change

    Hope this helps,

    Hi Brink,

Thanks for the Welcome! Unfortunately, that option did not work I opened 11 IE9s, 1 Windows Mail, 1 Windows Media Player and 11 Word 2010 docs. The 11s displayed as 11 list views and not 11 image views even though I restarted the computer with the registry key set to 32. I even tried 20.

    Heelllpppp!!!!!

Did you make any type of customization to the size of the taskbar thumnail preview windows than the default size?

No. It is standard, as setup by default from Windows 7.

Did you restart the computer after changing the setting?

I'm going to see if I can recreate what it happening to you on my system, but I need to know if this is on a laptop or desktop, what size screen, what screen resolution is set, and what theme (ex: Aero, basic, etc...) are you using to make it as accurate as possible. Could you also post a screenshot of this in list mode to help see if anything may stand out?

    Hi Brink,

Attached a screenshot with 13 ie9 tabs open in one window and then hovered over their taskbar icon. Also have a few word 2010 docs open.

I use Windows 7 with all updates, Aero, 3GB Fujitsu Siemens laptop (about 4-5 years old now) with 1024 x 768 screen size.

As said, 10 or less windows/tabs open is fine but after that I get list view mode.

Yes, I restarted the computer after the registry change.

    John

Sorry, meant to say the screen size is 1280 x 800.

Ok, after some testing, this turns out to be completely normal. However, nothing can be done about it.

Note added here for this: Taskbar List or Thumbnail Previews Mode - Change
If the taskbar thumbnail previews of multiple windows/tabs opened for a icon go past your screen's edge, then they will automatically be displayed in list mode instead of thumbnail preview mode.

For example, if your screen resolution is 1200x800, and say you have more than 15 tabs open in IE, then it will display in list mode when you hover over IE's icon on the taskbar.

    Limits before list mode examples:
1920x1080 = 15 tabs or windows open for a icon
1200x800 = 10 tabs or windows open for a icon
