Hello TVT,

This may be able to help you change the icon in chm.file for the .chm file extension type to a icon of your choice. chm.file will be where you change the DefaultIcon value at in the registry.

File Extension Icon - Change Default Icon

Hope this helps,
Shawn

The briefcase default icon is in the registry here HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon and the path to the default icon is %SystemRoot%\system32\syncui.dll,0
You might also have to change the default icon path here if you are running 64-bit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Classes\CLSID\{85BBD920-42A0-1069-A2E4-08002B30309D}\DefaultIcon

It looks like you will need to take ownership (see step 3 in Option Two of METHOD TWO in this link) of the DefaultIcon key first, then you should be able to modify the (Default) entry for your icon's location.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
