    Epson DX4800 scanner problems

I cannot get the scanner side of my Epson DX4800 printer/scanner/photocoppier to work on my new Dell computer running Windows 7 (which I don't particularly like). When I double click the icon to start it I just get an error message "Epson scan cannot be started. Please use the troubleshooting assistant to solve the problem".

Going there I get "If you are starting EPSON Scan using a TWAIN-compliant application, (which I think I am?) the error may be occurring because the TWAIN-compliant application is currently unstable. Try using a different TWAIN-compliant application. If the problem persists, try restarting the computer."

At a young72 I am not fully computer literate and have no idea what all this "Twain" means and so any suggestions where I should go next please. The printer works just fine!

The oldest 'silver surfer' i have helped mend/upgrade their pc was 95 yrs old - so you have nearly 25yrs to go yet!

    Please tell us
Which exact dell pc model you have (running on 32bit or 64bit)

Which version Windows 7 (you'll get used to it)
do you have? Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate etc

Have you been on epson site and downloaded the newest Win 7 (32bit or 64bit) latest driver versions?

Hi Neo. Thank heavens for that, thought I was on my last legs!!
The computer is a Dell Inspiron and the windows is Home Prem OA 64 bit (I think).
Yes I have been on the Epson website and downloaded the latest (recommended) drivers. Unfortunately even the printer didn't work then so I re installed it all from the original CD and at least the printer now works.

Dell Inspiron is a generic name for dozens of computer models i'm afraid - thats why we need the exact model/serial number.

Need this so we can double check info you give us ie 64bit? you were not sure of.

Go into Control panel > scroll to bottom click on "System"
In middle bar tells you 32 or 64bit!

While you are in there > look on list top left of screen Under Control panel home
    click on "Device Manager"

Scroll thru the panel list and tell us if any drivers are not loaded - they will appear with a yellow label/exclamation over them.

    Still no wiser!
It must be written on your dell receipt/paperwork.

I presume you have an Dell Inspiron Desktop (not laptop) with monitor?

Is it the Desktop with 3_in_1
Inspiron (with monitor) or (without monitor) current models are:
    560,
    560-s
    570,
    580,
    One 19
    Zino
    Zino HD
or a previous version not mentioned?

    Have a look on 'ere

Desktop Deals & PC Computer Sales | Dell UK

Hold mouse cursor over text-menu-heading called "desktop/all_in_ones" to display models

What software program did you use to start up the scanner please?

Did you check all your drivers are loaded OK - like I asked you in previous reply?

PS I think you ought to take off that serial number(use edit) from your previous post as it doesn't help!

Thanks - now we are getting somewhere!
    Model 560/64bit

Why does it take you nearly 12hrs to log back on here? Can't be in much of a hurry to fix problem !

You realise you MUST download only the 64bit printer/scanner drivers - 32bit will NOT work!
    Did you make sure?

Reason is, Win7 would probably have a built in 64bit driver ready to detect your printer - which is why printer only works at the moment!

Did you check all drivers are loaded ok in 'Device Manager' as asked?

Which program did you use to try to start the twain/scan driver?

If you bought all these items from Dell - do they not offer any support to get you going?

Getting a twain driver going, can be as easy as selecting the right one in a drop-down menu in (say) Photoshop! (as long as correct driver has been loaded correctly)

Thank you for your help. Although almost 72 I actually still work and am therefore not around all day to sit at a computer. In the evenings the computer is shared - my wife loves Lastdot FM???

Anyhow, I'll go through all this tomorrow when I have time and see whats what. I think I have downloaded both 32 and 64 bit drivers in frustration so guess I'd better start over from scratch. I'll go into device manager and see what it comes up wwith and take it from there.

I didn't get the combination printer with the computer from Dell, just the computer. I've had the printer for about a year, was my son'e at uni!

Thanks again. I'll get back to you shortly and no, not in any GREAT hurry, just like things to WORK!

    Cheers

Further to my last, I dpon't have the "Computer Manager" you mention above to check on drivers. I think I currently have both the 32 and 64 bit driver installed so obviously need to remove the 32 bit one but can't do that until I find it???
