    Driver causes BSOD

Upon installing a VIA HD Audio Driver for my M4A87TD/USB3 motherboard (http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?p_i...aaa&templete=2 under downloads, Windows 7 x64, audio), my computer BSODs and tells me its due to "a driver mismanaging PTEs." I've tested and I'm sure this is the responsible driver.

I've system restored and tried installing again but the results were the same. Without the driver my 5.1 speakers only function as 2.0 speakers.

This driver has worked with me before on a previous install on the same computer. It also works on another identical computer in the flat.

    Processor: AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.0ghz
    Motherboard: Asus M4A87TD/USB3
    OS: Windows 7 Professional

    exact driver name:
    VIA VT1818 Audio Driver V6.0.1.8100 for Windows 32/64bit XP & 32/64bit Vista & 32/64bit 7.

The audio codec you linked to is the correct one but the drivers for it are not available on that site. I would have tried older drivers but I couldn't find any unfortunately. Is there no way of "fixing" a malfunctioning driver?

EDIT: apparently I'm supposed to get this driver from the manufacturer (Asus) but they only provide the newest drivers. Hmmm

I found this possible fix for the PTE error:

[SOLVED] BSOD x64 Vista.. a driver is mismanaging PTES (2 nvidia cards).. - Tech Support Forum

It's for Vista, but hopefully the registry keys are the same and the fix will work for you.

Did you install all of the drivers that Asus provides for your motherboard?

Thank you for the suggestion but it didn't work. All the Asus drivers are up to date. Who knows what's happening; computers have a way of going wrong no matter what you do

    Thanks, I'll try that.

I realized that my chipset drivers were out of date so I installed the newest ones. After that I tried installing the audio drivers again and it worked. However, upon rebooting (required for changes to take efffect) the same BSOD occurred. It seems the new chipset drivers only delayed the BSOD.

I still don't get how they work on the same computer with a different install and even on another identical computer. Drivers work in strange ways...

I absolutely HAD to post on this thread, I have the exact same MOBO as you do jalebi and with it I received a cd with all the necessary drivers on it for me to install. I have spent the past five days reformatting my computer over and over testing out certain components to see if one is faulty etc etc. Only this morning I finally realised it was the drivers that were causing all of the crashes and bsods. I have had to look elsewhere for the drivers because if I get any off of the disk It screws my computer. At the moment I am looking for an audio driver for it and if I find a working one I will send you a link to it.

    Peace out, Vikeyev.

Did you D/L updated drivers from the Asus motherboard website?

You can usually find updated drivers for your motherboard that are newer than what you get on the CD.
