hi pebbly, thanks for the welcome, I have downloaded the patch, I ran the 'scan diagnostics utility' (via win vista) and that tells me the problem I have is with the 'solution centre' and hp imaging device,( the driver is ok), both have not loaded. I downloaded the full feature under the vista because it did'nt give me that option under win 7, I am so close to resolving this but am unsure how to get the solution centre and the hp imaging device, any suggestions, once again many thanks

Another thing to do after you put something in to be scanned, is open Devices and Printers, hover over the printer that's checked, then at the top, click on 'start scanner'.

hi pebbly, tried the compatability mode, no joy, hi Jacee, tried you suggestion but there was no 'start scanner' option, I can't seem to download the 'full feature' program, that is the problem according to the 'scan diagnostics utility and I can't find it on the hp website, its looking like a flatbed scanner cos hp are no help at all, thanks for all your help

hi pebbly/Jacee, guess what, don't know what I did but I have found a way to use the scanner, I just right clicked on the printer in 'printers and devices' and clicked 'scan' (well done Jacee)and hey presto it scanned, it was scanning in 'bitmap' and windows did'nt recognise the program that made it so I used 'jpeg' and all is well, what a happy bunny I am, many thanks for your help
