    Win 7 x64 Asus Laptop DVD/CD driver problem

    When I installed Win 7 clean, everything was fine for a couple of days. Then I noticed I had lost support for the Tosiba HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-T20L ATA which I used to install Windows. Now my CD doesn't even show up; trouble shooter says it can't install since the registry entry doesn't agree...huh???

    I tried copying the cdrom.sys from my Vista 64 to Win 7 64 and tried to get it to use that, but no avail.

    Anybody ever had this problem? I went back to my Vista 64 and the CD drive works fine.

    1) Perform a system restore, see here; System Restore or do a clean install again.

    2) (This MIGHT work Navigate to Start>All Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt (Right click and Run as administrator) and type in "sfc /scannow" (Do not type in the quotes; and leave space between 'sfc' and '/scannow') and wait until it's complete.

    Hope this helps,

    I tried it and it came up clean.

    OK, I just did a clean install a day before this happened so never had a chance to make a backup yet. I tried the scan and it came up clean. Here's the error message when I look at driver info in Device Manager:
    ===========================
    Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)
    ============================
    I also noticed the size of cdrom.sys in Win 7 is 144k and the one from vista 64 is 78k. I tried to copy, rename but it says I need permission from TrustedInstaller, which I can't find anywhere.

    Thanks for you help.

    Are you running any virtual drive software, ie Daemon Tools?

    Interesting but not solved

    Thanks to both of you for your help. I'm not running anything like nero etc. The code 19 thing I tried but it still came back with the same error.
    However, in the process of hunting this down, I found something else. I've had intermittent connection problems. Sometimes I could get some internet pages and not other...troubleshoot identified a dns problem and said there was no problem with my configuration. Well, when I was checking device manager for the cd problem, I notice intermittently that I lost internet access and the network cards were flagged...when I checked those out I found all of them had Avira drivers...I use Avira suite for firewall,antivirus etc. So I completely uninstalled Avira, cleaned out the temp files and registry and reboot...now I have no problems at all with connectivity and pages (dns). So I guess all problems have a silver lining....AVIRA is NOT compatible with Windows RC. (it seems more intermittent in the beta version but is real bad in 7). Now I will also check my Vista 64 for the same kind of problems.
    Anyway, I am now back to my one and only problems: the cd still is not recognized. I guess I have no choice but to do another clean install.

    Thanks a whole heap for all your help. I really appreciate it.

    solved!

    I got it working. If anybody else has this problem, here's the solution:
    CD-ROM drive not recognized, error code 19

    Now, EVERYTHING is working fine.
    Thanks for everybody's help. Maybe I can return the favor some day.
