    Are missing drivers the problem?

Two apparent problems on a Gateway NX570X computer seem to have occurred since installing Windows 7. The computer generally works fine...BUT the printer (Epson Stylus Color 980) will not print and the Mass Storage Controller has an exclamation point for troubleshooting. (Have already deleted the printer and reinstalled it - didn't fix the problem)

Second issue: the tapping seems out of control - anytime any hover occurs something is selected (unintentionally).

I tried the Gateway website for drivers but they insist that support must be paid for to obtain the drivers that would serve to update the Mass Storage Controller and the Synaptics Touch Pad because the computer was sent with Vista Operating System.

So I need advice - 1. Is it possible to find the drivers that would fix the two problems or 2. Is it best to reformat the hard drive and put Vista back on so the computer is functional.

Lastly, if I need to reformat the hard drive - does someone have the best website with instructions.

    Thank you.

    How to Find Drivers
search Google for the name of the driver
    - compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
    - visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
    - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone - will help you search Google for the name of the driver
    - compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
    - - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
    - The most common drivers are listed on this page: http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.html
    - - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html
To remove any left over driver remnants, especially from graphics cards, use driver sweeper

Perhaps this will help. I will help, tomorrow, also, if you post.

this is your chipset. you can download the mass storage controller driver from intels webite: Intel® 945PM

this is your video card: ATI Mobility™ Radeon® X1400 with Avivo™ Display Technology

you can download touchpad drivers directly from synaptics.

i could not find any win7 (or vista) drivers for that printer. maybe try installing in compatibility mode?

Thank you both for the replies. I also could not find a Windows 7 (or Vista) driver for the Epson Printer. It worked fine with Vista and it will print the test page but not other files.

I had found the Synaptics driver page at Drivers | Synaptics but I wasn't positive the same driver worked for all touchpads?

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sear...word=%22945%22 for Intel doesn't list a Windows 7 operating system choice - do I use Vista 32 bit?

    Thank you.

Sorry for the confusion - I have several different notebooks - My OWN personal primary computer is ASUS G73jh. The one I'm trying to "fix" with drivers is a close friends Gateway NX570X that came with Vista and then I have an older Gateway that runs Windows XP that has programs that won't run on my Windows 7 Asus computer (Adobe Photoshop 7.0 and Adobe Acrobat 5.0). Plus my son has a Notebook in the house as well as my daughter. I'm trying to find drivers for the Gateway NX570X so the Epson Stylus Color 980 will print and the Touchpad will not select everything it passes over.
