BSOD and then cant recognize hard drive  

Hello all,I've got a problem.
Yesterday night,while I was sitting on my laptop,a BSOD appeared and the computer restarted.After the comp restarted,I could reach till the "Windows is Starting page" and then another BSOD and the comp again restarted and so on.

When I went to startup repair,there was no Operating system to repair.It told me to "Load Drivers".
Then I tried using my win7 cd and on startup when I booted it up,at the after the "Custom Install" page where you choose on which partition to install to,and even there,there were no partitions and it told me to "Load mass storage drivers".

I searched around a bit and found out that it is something to do with SATA harddrives and IDE's and Bios's.

Since then I've tried nearly everything but to no avail.
I am not a n00b and I've solved many problems myself but this time I'm at a total loss

I had Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

THIS is my laptop,its been just over a month since I bought it.

1) My laptop doesnt have any option in the Bios about SATA and IDE's (hp's newer laptops have stopped giving that option i read somewhere)

2) I checked the Drivers on the hp site and downloaded the chipset (i think it might be useful) and intel storage driver. I even went to the Intel driver site to find something similar.I put all of those on a USB drive and extracted all those that could be extracted.At the install screen when I browsed for the drivers (I put a whole load of them) , and enabled the "Hide those drivers that are not compatible with this hardware" , Even after filtering I got many drivers that could be installed , but when I install them,nothing happens and no partitions appear.
(there are a lot of them like Intel series 5/3400 sata 4 port and PCI bus communications or something and I've tried many but no use).
I tried both the x86 and 64bit drivers.

3) Also there is no way of telling what about the other drivers.Who knows,they all might have been wiped out.
How,i dont know.

4) Also there is a hp disk checker utility that you can use at startup.
When I tried it,after checking (which took quite some time) i was told that my hard drive was fine and SMART check was also fine.
(I think its a confirmation that the harddrive didnt fail,its prob just the drivers)

5) I borrowed XP and Vista Cd's from friends and when booting them,even they do not show any partitions.
But I'll stick with trying to install Win7 drivers since the official laptop page only has drivers of Win7.

HELP SOMEONE??

Good news!
I installed Ubuntu on a portable drive and it picked up my HD!
as you can see its a Hitachi,not a Toshiba (sorry)

Now the thing is,I had 4 drives.
A Music
B Movies
C Windows 7
E Setups misc etc
The C drive was 169 gb and everything is in it.
But it seems like the A and B partitions have been added into E.
My E partition was around 50 gb,A was 70 and B was around 200.
All of those have been added up to give me 331 GB. The files from partition E are still there,but the files from A and B are not there.

After going into this drive,you can see that now it shows only 50 gb (which was the size of the original E drive). The Music and Movies partition is missing/hidden.

My guess is that they still exist,but are hidden.
Heck,even in Windows 7 after doing a clean install,I could see my C and E drive but couldnt see my A and B ones.
So I went into Administrative tools and then into Disk Management and the partition was still there and I only had to assign a drive letter to them and then they appeared on My Computer.
I think its because by default you can only see the C,D,E,F drives and you have to 'unhide' or re-assign the other drive letters.
So any help about this :S?

Also now you must have seen the sata storage controller and hard drive model,so can someone point me to a driver please!?!

I tried many drivers,even those from the official site.
NONE of the drivers did.It just refused to pick up my HD.
They were the correct ones too.


In the end I got tired.
The drive A and B didnt have any important data,my C had them in My Documents and I salvaged those.

Using ubuntu,I just formatted the entire drive.
Then when I booted my w7 cd,i could see my HD.
"Unallocated 430 Gb".


Now before I install w7 again,I want to make sure that this problem doesnt happen again.
What in the world caused the comp to suddenly bsod and then refuse to pick up my hd?
Could it be that there was a certain file or something on the current HD that was preventing any windows OS to locate it?
Even if I had an HP recovery partition or a windows 7 recovery image,I couldnt have done anything.
About what I was doing,when the bsod occured,I was:


1) Creating an ISO from my cd with IMGBURN
The Official ImgBurn Website


2) Configuring XPADDER
Xpadder.com


3) Running Windows Secuirity Essenials
I had just removed the previous antivirus IMMUNET:
Immunet - FREE Fast Companion Antivirus ,
in favor of WSE.


None of these were capable enough of messing with the system i think.


The main thing is that something was there that prevented even a fresh installation.


Any ideas?


And after formatting should I start with assigning each partition from letter C and onwards seeing as you have to manually unhide letters A and B?

You did what I was going to suggest when you booted to Ubuntu. Sometimes a different OS can help.

Frankly I'm stumped as to why you couldn't see the drive when booted to CD until after you blew away the partition. I wish I could give you an answer, but nothing comes to mind.

It sounds like you're back up and running, which is good. I'll recommend that you download the free tools from Microsoft and create a Windows PE disk. Mine has been invaluable.
