    toshiba laptop mass storage controller

have loaded windows 7 7000 on two test machines, desktop running fine. clean installs in both cases. toshiba satellite a200 runs faster than vista, better shutdown et al, but has a quality index of 2.0 due to driver not loading for mass storage controller, pci memory controller and one unnamed device under other devices.

tried loading the drivers for vista for mass storage controller and chipset under compatability mode which installed but not recognized by windows 7.

anyone with a toshiba laptop get their msc functioning? any ideas?

Did you have any windows updates for your hardware, make sure you have optional updates selected as well.

thanks mr grim....yeah did that. also tried the toshiba canada site, probably the best for tosh drivers and attempted manual install for chipset and intel matrix storage manager under admin and in compatability which installed but unrecognized.

as i said, this was a clean install on a seperate partition, so if no one has any ideas, i may try wiping, loading vista onto the partition and upgrade from there to see what happens.

    for anyone interested

i believe that the issue is traced to a feature on the toshiba laptops commonly called turbo boost , a memory caching feature because that indicates in device manager that it has issue also. the feature is not applicable to all laps nor to all toshiba product. personally i think it a little suspect in any event so on the whole not worried about this after researching at all. the indicators in device manager seem to not affect the unit at all other than the forementioned file transfer process which seems a tad slow.

the windows experience index is low at 2.0 but i think this in error also, the performance of the machine compared to the original vista absolutely rocks under windows 7. very impressed to date and will certainly replace all my vista installed units when this OS goes retail.

    Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Beta 7057 / Vista Ultimate

I have a Satellite X205-S9810 and am having the same type of problems with W7 x64 Ultimate, 7057 build. There is a Mass Storage controller that is not loading a driver. This is for my Media card slot as the 4 GB disk in it is not showing up in the computer view. With the 7057 build the hard drive speed improved drastially from the 7048 build, I went from 2.0 disk speeds to 5.0. I am not sure where the Vista drivers are for this device as it works great without loading any drivers. I have the SD host controller installed and working fine, with no errors so I am not sure where the problem is.

I plug in a USB thumb drive and it works find loads in seconds, but the SD slot still does not work. It works fine in Vista x86 Ultimate SP1.

Looked up the TI PCI XX12 Flash Media Controller driver on the Toshiba website and installed this driver and now all is good. Look for the "Toshiba SD Memory Utilities for Windows Vista/XP" driver

*note* The Speed boost file that I have on a 4 GB disk I am using is not showing up in Windows 7 as taken, it is free space, so I guess if I want to try Speed Boost on Win 7 I will have to get another disk and keep this one for Vista.

PCI Memory Controller Laptop Freezes - disable = fix!

    Hi folks,

Just successfully loaded windows 7 build 7068 x86 onto my Lenovo R61 Laptop.

    Then started experiencing freeze ups.

This continued at the same time I was getting Driver install errors for the PCI Memory Controller (iaNvStor.sys). After searching the Net came across this in another Forum which set me on the path to disable this device. Since then NO Freezes .. so far!

What I discovered after further investigation into my own BSOD is this:

    1. A backup restore will not revive the OS.

    2. This was an Intel Turbo Memory (Robson NAND) issue. The TM was confused about where the cache is located. If you actually go into the TM Console installed on the HDD or OS volume that's unbootable, you'll find that it's a standalone executable and can be opened from inside any other OS. When I looked at the Console, it told me that the TM cache location was the HDD, not the TM. (TM does not have a 100GB cache!)

There may be underlying fault with the Intel ICH8M and ICH8M-E I/O controller hub architecture (southbridge chip), since many PCs I've looked up that have this problem use this ICH model. The design problems probably have to do with the IDE emulation mode (in BIOS, the SATA 'compatibility mode'), which Intel dropped in subsequent I/O Controller Hub models -- going with all AHCI / SATA.

    3. In my case, this problem is with a Lenovo ThinkPad T61p. The T61p has a swappable HDD bay (the Ultrabay Slim) that takes a SATA connector, but only runs (Lenovo does not acknowledge this) in IDE mode. (See this thread.) This is conjecture, but it may be that this is confusing the ICH. Lenovo has not come forward with any explanation of the sources of this BSOD.

    4. It is, however, recognized that the Intel Matrix Storage Manager (iaNvStor.sys), which is a driver necessary for running the Turbo Memory, and which is a key component of the ICH8M and ICH8M-E causes a lot of different problems on the T61p.

This includes problems with freezes due to MSM interference with the 'drop guard' (the Active Protection System accelerometer). See this thread. These freezes are especially prominent with hybrid HDDs, where Windows Vista has a low-power write-caching setting called Windows Hybrid Hard Disk Power Saving. When the PC gets bumped, the APS kicks in, and the WHHDPS wants to write everything to disc before the HDD is locked, and MSM can't handle both requests.

    5. I have not heard a final update from Intel, but I will quote an Intel engineer who helped a little bit with pinpointing the issue:

The issue is with the system seeing the ReadyDrive Cache in Robson (Mobile) but it is not loading properly in the boot sequence. I have seen this issue when the module is moved from one system to another or if the backing HDD is removed / duplicated with the cache blocks in Robson not matching the disk location.

I would have the customer go into the laptop’s BIOS and turn off Robson (which will then keep the system from trying to boot from the ReadyDrive cache….)
After the system boots go into control panel and uninstall the Intel Turbo Memory Driver and reboot. After the reboot completes successfully, reboot and stop in BIOS to re-enable the Robson feature After the system boots, scan for hardware changes and the driver should re-install.

The preceeding should clean / invalidate the cache on ReadyDrive and the system should come back fine.

In other words, swapping the HDD from the internal slot to the Ultrabay set this off. As a matter of fact, TechNet's Keith Combs mentions an unspecified problem seemingly along these exact lines in a blog post from November 2007. (See this link.) Again, Lenovo has not commented on this at all.

Although I am recommending the AHCI setting above, please note there is a bug associated with that setting if using an Ultrabay hard drive adaptor and second hard drive. In that situation until the bug is fixed, you must flip the Serial ATA setting to Compatibility and add the second hard drive to the boot order of the machine. If you don't, you will see one or more bugs we've already identified and reported to Lenovo. They are working on BIOS fixes at present.

There are two unresolved mysteries about Intel's explanation. First, the HDD that BSODed has no ReadyDrive cache -- it's an older model without a hybrid NAND cache. Second, the T61p BIOS has no means to turn off Robson. Eventually I will go in and physically unplug the Robson chip, but I haven't gotten that drastic yet. I'm waiting to see what Intel says, if they're going to bother to reply.
I attempted to load the latest Drivers from Lenovo/Intel and yup it said the OS was incorrect and could not proceed.

So I've just disabled this device for now. So far no difference in performance that I can see. HTH!

The driver I used to fix the Mass Storage Controller error in device manage with XP SP3 on Satellite A135 was off the Toshiba Recovery and Applications/Drivers A130/A135 CD. TI Multiple Digital Meda Card Reader.

I am still messing with the SM Bus Controller.

    Good Luck

    Toshiba laptop mass storage controller

I have a Toshiba Satellite A105-s361. I just reformatted and did a clean install of Windows 7 home premium. I used the driver Phews recommended above (TI Multiple Digital Media Card Reader), and the mass storage controller issue has been resolved. Thanks Phews!

As a side note, I called Toshiba support and they told me that they are telling customers NOT to install Windows 7 on laptops from 2007 or before as Windows 7 in not supported on those machines. How is the average user who just reads the Windows 7 requirements supposed to know the even if their Toshiba machine meets all of the requirements for Windows 7, that they could still run into problems because Toshiba doesn't support it.

I only got to speak with Toshiba tier 1 support (or pay $35), but they were useless. All they said is sorry, we don't support Windows 7 on that machine, you'll have to do a search on the internet. I asked about the possibility of them pointing me to an XP or Vista driver on their site that might resolve the problem and they said no, they didn't have anything - well, clearly they did.

So, is this a Toshiba or a Microsoft issue?

@ Hieidimoe You can run windows upgrade advisor on the system you want to upgrade to Windows Seven, it will let you know if your going to run inot any issues by upgrading. Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor - Download - Microsoft Windows Fabe
@Phews the SM bus controller should be included in your chipset drivers, could you please provide the last letter and 4 numbers of the A135 Toshiba list like 10 different models it would help. http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/t...t/jsp/home.jsp Their is another way and it is to go to device manager>right click on the device>properties>details tab>drop down menu>select hardware ID (first one) Copy and Paste the hardware ID string and we can search using it. Thanks. Fabe
