That would actually tend to indicate a software problem.
There are masses of people on the net complaining about Epson scanners and drivers, and most of the solutions which have been tried do not seem appropriate in your case.
For quite a number the solution seems to have been clearing any reference to escndv.exe from the registry and removing any epson folders before re-installing.
This is just a long shot, but have you tried using CCleaner?
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner download and run it. You can run the cleaner anyway.
Once you have run the cleaner, go to "Registry" and click on "Scan for issues". See if there are any references to Epson etc, if there are, click on "Fix selected issues", restart the machine, and then try to run the scanner again.
