    Need Detective

Asus GS1n Laptop Rom Driver. Device driver panel says "Matshita DVD Rom UJ-861S ATA device". Rom drive presently doesn't work with a driver from win 7 install.

Done copious searches. Everything I found points to buying updater software. Surely this driver is available some where. Could now be Panasonic.

I dont see any driver on Asus site nor Panasonic. Could just be me. Would somebody give me a kick start.

To my knowledge there is no driver needed and hasn't been since Win 98SE. They are built into the OS and or BIOS to make them function correctly.
Only in the old days did you need the MSCDX and maybe something like ATIXXX something from a DOS BOOT disk to access the CD drive. But with the advent of bootable CD/DVDs and the BIOS control of that before any OS is loaded there isn't any need for those drives anymore.

The way to check this is to put a bootable CD or DVD in the drive and restart the system at the BIOS load screen hit the key that brings up a one time boot menu and select the CD/DVD drive as the boot device. If the bootable CD/DVD starts to load (Look for a on screen prompt to Hit Any Key To Boot From CD/DVD drive. Hit a key) then you know the drive is functioning correctly.

GS1n? You sure about that model number as it doesn't exist on Asus' site (or Google for that matter).

Unless the drive is something funky it shouldn't need anything other than the default Windows driver, which is the cdrom.sys driver. Don't happen to have something like Alcohol or Daemon Tools installed on it do you? I came across one forum where that was what was causing the drive to not work,

    Asus

At Asus the model exists here:

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download G1Sn

I tend to agree with shootist. Something else must me amiss. The system recognizes I have put a disk in but it asks to format it. My son took the laptop so I will have to get it back to do more troubleshooting.

Something to check when you get it back,

Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs

P.S. Small transposition error in your first post with the model number.

    Typo

    It's a good thing I didn't try to make a living as a typist.

Stormy, when I get the lap top back I'll start with that MS link.
    Thanks

You and me both. I would be lost without Firefox's spell checker.

    GadZooks!

You people will have to excuse me. I must have been having a bad day. I got the laptop back and got all set up for a trouble shoot. I started with the bios. The drive was being detected but the boot devices had everything disabled except the hard drive. I enabled the cd rom and external device and everything started working.

Thanks to 'yall for the replying.
