Just received a response from HP Support, advising that the broken links to download the latest 5.3.1 Universal Printing Drivers (PCL5, PCL6 and PS) dated July 1 2011 have now been corrected.
64-bit Win7 PCL6 driver can be obtained here.
64-bit Win7 PCL5 driver can be obtained here.
64-bit Win7 PS driver can be obtained here.
If you need the 32-bit Win7 versions you can start here.
This is fantastic ... Thanks !!!

I HATE universal print drivers. They are chatty and usually seem to cause problems.
An Internet search reveals that HP have not bothered to provide drivers for many of their printers, presumably because they are written in low level code. A cynic might suggest that they do it deliberately in an attempt to get you to buy another printer from them. If this is not the case, they are failing their customers and do not deserve to keep them. My printer is a deskjet 540 and, as far as I can tell, it is one of their orphaned products.
