Is the laptop Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit?
When you initiate the print of something from the laptop, do you see the printer icon appear in the System Tray on the laptop? Does it remain visible indefinitely, or does it disappear?
On the Windows 7 laptop, if you Start -> Devices and Printers -> select the shared printer on the XP machine -> right-click -> OPEN, is the document you just printed shown there?
