    Old HP LaserJets

I have a old HP LaserJet 4 that worked with Vista and would not work after upgrading to Windows 7. It also would not work on two other laptop computers with XP.

Changing the printer port to a Virtual Printer for USB made this old workhorse of a printer work with all three laptop computers. It's printing beautifully.

I found after many hours and days that it is NOT a print driver issue.

I have a Belkin F5U002 parallel USB adapter that connects the printer to the computers. This device is identified under Devices and Printers as IEEE-1284.

    Hope this helps someone.

I have an old Brother HL-1230 laser printer that only has the parallel port connection. I used a NexXtech parallel to USB adapter. The only drivers that came with it were for windows 98 and ME. Windows 7 x64 picked it up just fine and the printer works with windows Vista drivers. Luck of the draw I guess. I didn't think it was going to work but I wanted to connect the printer to my Routers USB Shareport port so I could share it over my network.

I was finally able to get my LaserJet 4 to work with Win 7 by selecting a Virtual Printer for USB. In fact, I had several computers that would not work with this printer and by placing it in a Virtual Printer for USB port the printer is working will all my computers. I even had trouble getting it to work with XP. Changing the printer port did the trick and works like a charm.

One person suggested un-checking the bidirectional box under the Port Tab. That made no difference for me one way or another.

HP Laserjet 4 printer on a new win 7 computer

I have a new Win 7 32 bit computer and I want to use my HP LaserJet 4 printer. I connected a printer port to USB cable, windows loaded some software and it shows ready to use but no printer attached. The printer shows in Printers and Devices but show it off line and it will not print. I tried checking ports including virtual ports under the properties. Please help
