to gather info for filling in the blanks.

Provide full windows version info, such as provided by Speccy: MS Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
Use the “Other Info” block for Optical Reader, Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor
Scroll down and click on the SAVE CHANGES
My general approach, which doesn't always work, is 1) the Trouble shooter available thru the control panel and 2) the FitxIt site.
Control Panel | make sure that small icons is selected, then TroubleShooting | click on HARDWARE AND SOUND | you will see a playing audio and recording audio option

When you go into device manager, do you see a Sound, video and game controllers item and underneat that a High Definition Audio Device with perhaps a yellow marking on it? Right-click and see if you have an "enable" opton.
