Printer Driver Help

Good day all! New to the forum so please bear with me. I am giving my daughter a Lexmark 7100 series all-in-one printer. After some research, I found I had to download the x64bit driver for Vista. I tracked down the appropriate driver on Lexmark website. It is an executeable file. First, is this the correct driver? Second, how do we install the driver on her computer? Do we install via the disc and then click the driver file or install the driver file first then the disc? She has Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Thanks!

This is what has always works best for me when installing a printer on Vista or Windows 7. I can't say it's the best way and others may find a better way. Before I try to install the printer with a disk or file, I just shut down the computer. I then turn on the power to the printer and insert the USB cord in the computer. When the computer boots up it will tell you that it found a new device. It will detect the device and go on line to find the most recent software and install it. You, of course, have to have an internet connection. I'm not saying that there is no better way, just that it works fine for me.

I have an HP wireless printer and that tells me to install the drivers first from the CD supplied.

Generally speaking, you should be prompted during the installation period when to power up the printer and connect either the USB cable or set up the wireless connection, depending on which sort of printer you've got.

That said, there's no harm in trying Frank's suggestion as Windows 7 has a pretty expansive driver database now.

It's amazing how Windows 7 does it. My printer is an HP. When Windows detected my printer it went directly to HP's website and installed the software. I think it first looks at its data base--but I'm not sure. But you are correct as the manual always tells you to install from the disk. Likewise it will tell you that it will let you know when to hookup the cords.

Hello Duckman,

Welcome to 7 forums.

I see that you need help in installing your new HP Printer drivers. If you are not sure about the drivers that you have downloaded, I would suggest you to install the driver from the disk initially and you can update the software via internet automatically after the installation. This would avoid any further issues in installing the printer, if you are new for this kind of installation procedure.

Please make sure you follow the screen instructions slowly during the installation procedure. Its just easy.

♥ Cheers ♥
