Issues with going from 11.5 catalyst drivers to 11.8 (or any other)

so i noticed this issue about 4 months ago when 11.6 came out. i tried to install it and it did just fine. no errors. but then i restart my pc (like it tells you to) and my resolution is all off and i get a error saying that i didnt install the appropriate driver (i did) or i dont have a amd gpu (clearly do). i can open ccc and when i do it is very basic. no gpu options just 4 tabs. and it is in advanced.
So heres what i have done.
    Reinstalled the drivers many times
uninstalled through amds options in reg mode and in safe mode.
Have ran driver sweeper erased all amd and ati files in regular mode and then again in safe mode restarting everytime. still no dice
manually set the driver in the device manager(went to my 5850 and did it from there)
i plan on buying battle field 3 soon but if i cant download the latest drivers i cant update it to get hot fixes or anything.
also 4 months ago i called amd tech support they told me to wait for 11.7 to come out and it will be fixed...11.8 came out i called again and they said wait for 11.9...yeah ill get right on that......
any ideas before i take the gtx460 out of my gfs pc and see if i can update there drivers? because if the 460 works and can update i guess im going to assume its my card and rma it
    this is getting really annoying

Hi branflake welcome to SF :)

Please follow these steps in this order,

Do the ati catalyst remove cleaning, restart.

Download and install software\driver 10.11,during installation choose custom and untik\disable registration and free game, finish, restart.
    Previous ATI Catalyst

Download and install software\driver 11.8 and again during the installation choose custom and this time untik\disable only the new catalyst 2,finish,restart.
    ATI Radeon

With the above steps you will have all the new software\drivers without the new catalyst 2.

Though you will have the catalyst 1 to control your gpu.

Finish with the above steps an post back with any results.

You still can reinstall any driver prior to 11.6? If so then from my experience with Ati-AMD there's little you can do. I had a HD 4870 and the drivers were horrible from 2009. Catalyst 9.1 refused to install (similar issues to yours) and then they had introduced ULPS which caused black screens for me ... extremely irritating! A helpful tip for catalyst & general stability with AMD drivers lurking ... avoid using all registry cleaners. Helped me big time but still ... nvidia hasn't given me trouble since I got my 460's.

Select Individual Downloads and install only the drivers, not any catalyst or anything else.

Ofcurse you must always download and use the correct\appropriate driver.

    For win7 32bit the 32bit driver and for win7 64bit the 64bit driver.

I had a problem upgrading to the 11.8 drivers. I had 11.6 installed and had upgrade just fine with all the 11.x versions by simply downloading the file from AMD and running it.

When I upgraded using the 11.8 file, it appeared to go OK -- but when I opened the AMD Vision Engine Control Center and looked at the info, it still said 11.6.

Then, I stumbled across a file from AMD that you can install locally and it will then get new drivers for you.

I ran that, and it "upgraded" me to 11.8 -- again. Only now, when I look at the same AMD panel, it really does say 11.8.

So, perhaps there's some deficiency in the 11.8 driver package downloads from AMD.
