Downloaded newest available driver for graphics card but wont install

I have Sony Laptop VGN-AR 870 W7 x64. Using NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. I want to update to the newest version available for my graphics card, which is Version 280.26 but when I go through the setup it says "This graphics dirver could not find compatible graphics hardware".

Well what the hell does that mean? I went to NVIDIA's website and downloaded this driver specifically for my 8600M gt card.

What should I do from here? update manually (I dont know how)? Troubleshoot somehting? lol

btw: the properties of the 8600M gt says that I am not digitally signed. if that means anything

If it was my computer I would go to the Sony web site and see if they had any updated driver.

Did you down load the "M" mobile version driver or the regular driver meant for discreet graphics cards? You need the M version for laptop graphics cards.

OK, just wanted to make sure. If you had downloaded the wrong one it may have been an easy fix. If the manufacturer doesn't have a Windows 7 driver you might be between a rock and a hard place. I've used Vista drivers for printers and such with no problems, even on Windows 7 64 bit. If Sony has a Vista driver try that. Sometimes you can get lucky searching here too.
    Microsoft Update Catalog
It sounds like Sony modified the BIOS for you 8600M or its a custom version that the NVIDIA installer can't ID.

Before you go "all out" let me ask you this: Is there a particular reason that you want to update, or just the higher version number?
Normally there is no gain in replacing a perfectly good driver. Drivers don't come with expiration dates

You need to remember that OEM drivers supplied by your computer manufacturer may be configured differently to drivers supplied by the hardware manufacturer, which may explain the message you're getting.

If your graphics card is working without a problem I'd be inclined to leave well alone. Downloading the latest driver because it is the most recent one, can and does lead to problems sometimes.

If a driver is not digitally signed it means it is not compliant with Microsoft's standards, and as such, the performance cannot be guaranteed.
