There are some manufacturers that provide some sort of scan to detect missing or outdated drivers (i say some... maybe most do?).

Do you know the manufacturer of the laptop?
You should be able to see manufacturer and model on the laptop (around the screen or on the bottom of the laptop)

If not you should be able to see it within SYSTEMINFO
Click Start >> Type MSINFO32 >> Press Enter

Also note that some newer Notebooks are putting the make and model data sticker inside the battery compartment, might look there. Some BIOSes may have model data, also try Advisor from Belarc - System Management For The Internet Age. Software license management, IT asset management, IT security audits and more., it's free.

I see, but even 'IF' and 'hypothetical' scenarios tend to have some backbone / meaning behind them.

I'm not sure you would ever find yourself in this situation though?

I would just run an audit software like speccy or belarc adviser and this would tell you all you need to know about a system
