If i update to windows 7 instead of format, will my drivers be untouched or will i have to reinstall them?

No matter which way you go, your drivers will be replaced. You may not need to re-install - one of the nice things about 7 are the driver compatibilty non-issues.

Windows 7 will have or will get all the drivers you will need just as was said. Driver compatibilty is no problem. Install is no problem. You maybe might need to let it update and reboot once or so but with your new hardware it should be a walk in the park. Good luck to you and enjoy the 7

If this is your model # VGN-SR490JCN then you may be able to solve your problem by installing the correct downloaded driver file. My guess would be notebook and controls utilities. Sony eSupport - VGN-SR490JCN - Software Updates & Drivers
I took a quick glance at the user manual for this laptop. The link available on above page and saw the part about brightness with function keys. Hopefully some user with the same system will help you. Maybe try the Sony help system. On another note Sony promises all drivers and support for seven after the release date which is in oct. Good luck to you. Sony eSupport - VGN-SR490JCN

Follow these instructions over here: VAIO FW Clean Windows 7 Install Guide - Notebook Forums and Laptop Discussion

I think just install the Event Service software, and you'll get it running. Don't install the battery thing from Sony, though.

I think it's a some utility Sony has installed to ensure that you don't use unauthorized batteries, but in Windows 7, for some reason it's not working correctly and a dialog pops up every 5sec saying there's a problem with the battery. No harm not running it if you're using the original battery.
