Sorry to hear the
drivers didn't do as expected

it is possible however to do a
driver roll-back in device manager to get your dvd drive back, I assume it was the chipset
driver at fault?
Have a read here:
Your CD drive or DVD drive is missing or is not recognized by Windows or other programs
If this was my machine the install would have been nuked by now and started afresh

however this may not be an option for you

.
I have to admit I have found win 7 to be the easiest and most reliable OS I have used (Win 95, Win98/98Se, Win ME, Win Xp, Win 7 beta and finally Win 7

), from installation to updating and
driver installs even in compatibility mode

.
Sony are also a nightmare with their different versions of the same model of Pc. especially for finding
drivers
My personal preference is to identify the components in a laptop/desktop and go direct to the chipset/controllers etc manufacturer and d/load their latest
drivers
(doesn't always give you full functionality if OEM has modded said components)
Sorry I can't be of more assistance to you

maybe a more knowledgeable forum member can assist you in your quest!.
