SD Card Reader Not Working, Toshiba Portege Laptop I just got a Toshiba Portege R835-P83 laptop. It has a SD card reader but it is not working - in the Device Manager for the Ricoh SD Disk Device it says - "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"
I have tried downloading the latest driver from the Toshiba website but it still doesn't work. Anybody have any suggestions? | My System Specs

Have you tried installing the driver in compatibility mode for whichever operating system was previously on the machine? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Logitech M500 Laser Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Twin 1Tb Barracuda archivage, Twin TV/PVR 2Tb Samsungs, (80Gb Barracuda for the OS, but SSD envisaged...) It's a completely new machine that came with Windows 7 64 bit so I didn't use compatibility mode. | My System Specs

I'd assumed you were upgrading from a prior OS, but if the machine came with Windows 7 onboard and it was all AOK then have you thought about running a system restore, or reverting back to your restore partition drive image, or disks, which came with the machine? | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Logitech M500 Laser Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Twin 1Tb Barracuda archivage, Twin TV/PVR 2Tb Samsungs, (80Gb Barracuda for the OS, but SSD envisaged...) System restore doesn't have restore points for whatever reason, I'm not sure why. As for reverting back to the partition drive image, I'd have to install all my programs and stuff again, which I'd rather not do....
I might end up doing that eventually but I'd like to try other options first, if they exist. | My System Specs

I would still be tempted to try reinstalling the driver that came with the machine in compatibility mode. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Logitech M500 Laser Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Twin 1Tb Barracuda archivage, Twin TV/PVR 2Tb Samsungs, (80Gb Barracuda for the OS, but SSD envisaged...) I tried compatibility modes for both Vista and XP, neither of them worked.
The thing is it doesn't seem like Windows is trying to use the driver that I installed - the version number of the driver off the Toshiba website is 2.15.17.02, but the version of the driver that the device manager says is not properly loaded/corrupted is 6.1.7600.16385.
Is there any way to force Windows to use the driver that I downloaded for the SD card reader? | My System Specs

Try uninstalling the hardware in device manager, and choose to remove the driver software simultaneously.
It's an idea to either pull your net connection or set Windows not to automatically search Windows updates for missing drivers when you do this.
Then manually reload the driver package which was originally installed, and should remain on your installation disks, through device manager. | My System Specs | | System Manufacturer/Model Number Custom built machine OS W7 x64 CPU Intel Q9300 2.5Ghz Quad LGA775 (Would like Q9650) Motherboard Gigabyte GA-EP45T-UD3R (F6 Bios) Memory 4Gb OCZ Gold 1,333Mhz Graphics Card Palit HD4850 O/C Sonic 512Mb DDR3, Dual DViD's Sound Card Azalia to twin Samson 50w Studio Monitors Monitor(s) Displays Twin Dell (E-IPS) U2311H 23.6" Screens Screen Resolution 1920 x 1080 @ 60Hz Keyboard Cherry PS/2 custom model Mouse Logitech M500 Laser Mouse PSU OCZ 600w Case Lian-Li PC8 acoustifoamed' aluminium tower Cooling Scythe 140mm Zipang Hard Drives Twin 1Tb Barracuda archivage, Twin TV/PVR 2Tb Samsungs, (80Gb Barracuda for the OS, but SSD envisaged...)
