Win 7 does not recognize my Canon 7D camera - driver not found

I have just built a new Win 7 Ultimate N-based PC for photo editing. When I attach my Canon 7D, the camera appears in my devices list with a warning (troubleshoot). When I do this it searches for the device driver, but comes back with an error that says that the driver was not installed correctly. So camera is not visible to the PC - cant connect or download images. On the MS support site it tells me that Canon EOS 7D is supported in Win 7 - no additional action required. Anyone any idea how I can get the drivr working?

Go here> Canon U.S.A. : Consumer & Home Office : EOS 7D

Enter your OS and you should find the driver you need.

Also in your system specs you list this> Windows 7 Ultimate n

Is it 32bit or 64bit? You should add that.

Canon 7D driver for Win 7

Thanks Hopalong - tried this but only found the Canon Utilities there (as well as firmware) but no specific drivers. I did download the updated utilities but didnt make any difference.... Unless the driver is contained in one or more of the utilities and I need to load from scratch?

That is a possibility.

I thought the driver might be seperate.
I have no other ideas.
Sorry.

Your camera probably came with a cd or dvd, unplug the camera completely, install the software and then plug in the camera and let in recognize new hardware and it should install the drivers from windows or they were in the software you installed. Worth a try.

Is the camera configured in MTP/PTP mode (no Windows drive letter assigned when you plug it in, no "safely remove hardware" icon in System Tray which must be clicked to "eject" before you pull the USB cable), or MSC "mass storage" mode (which gets a Windows drive letter assigned when you plug it in, and also produces the "safely remove hardware" icon which you MUST click to "eject" before pulling the USB cable from the PC)?

I'd suggest the MSC mode.

Also, if you have an external SD card reader you can certainly just remove the flash card from the camera and put it in the reader, in order to access the same images on the card using the same Canon ZOOM Browser software (it can read directly from a card in a reader... doesn't have to be inserted into the camera).

I bought this inexpensive IOGear card reader, for my SD, SDHC, and microSDHC cards. Works perfectly.

Thanks for the suggestions - already tried reloading the Utilities disk, AND downloading all updates from the Canon site - no joy.....

Again... is your camera configured for USB connection via (a) MTP/PTP, or (b) MSC? This is a settings/menu option.

Does it get a windows drive letter assigned or not? If so, then your camera is in MSC mode. If not, then your camera is in MTP/PTP mode.

I'm suggesting to try THE OTHER setting, whatever the camera is currently at. Then plug the camera into the PC and see if there's any "recognition" by Windows 7 and auto-install of the Windows 7 drivers for the camera.

Windows 7 Ultimate N - 32bit

Did you find a solution?

I just did a clean Windows 7 Ultimate N - 32 reinstall on my T500 because it didn't work. And .... it didn't help at all. Tried installing Windows 8 Customer preview and there is works fine.

Tried updating all drivers from the Lenovo website and device manager is happy with everything except my 7D.

I don't believe you can change the USB mode on the 7D.

Interesting.

Of course the flash card can simply be removed from the camera and read using any USB card reader, so while terribly annoying, frustrating, and bothersome, getting the pictures out of the camera is the real objective. So even if you have to revert to using a card reader, that's certainly not a terrible workaround solution.
