Reinstall the drivers for this device. (Code 18)

I recently had to reinstall Win 7 64. I did it as an "upgrade" install per the instructions elsewhere on this site. (.../tutorials/3413-repair-install.html). All is almost fine but...

I have a Canon 9000F scanner. I have the most recent drivers from Canon and they are installed. But, every time I restart, the computer tries to do this: Installing Device Driver Software. Then I get the message that the drivers were not correctly installed. Then, I go to the device manager, click on the error for the scanner, and go to properties and get this message:
The scanner doesn't work because the computer thinks the driver is bad when the driver is apparently up to date.

I have tried uninstalling the driver and re-installing, and have tried running and .exe from Canon with no success.

    Now What?

    Win 7 64 bit
    Dell Studio 435MT
    15 GB Ram

If the driver is From before July 2009 you need to install it in compatibility mode

Right click the installer>properties>compatibility>choose OS (that the driver was for)

The most recent driver is dated Feb 2012.

Hum, cant get much more recent than that. Just in case try it in vista compatibility. Sometimes that makes for a smoother install.

Tried that - no difference. And, I tried to uninstall the driver thru the Device manager window, then tried to re-install from original CD. The install program said newer drivers were installed. How do I go back to square 1 as if this had never been installed at all and then reinstall?

Try un-installing in safe mode, reboot, then install new.

Been on vacation. Tried that. no difference. I have tried everything I can think of - uninstalled drivers, reinstalled drivers from original CD - computer still wants to look for drivers. Installed on a Win 7 laptop and everything is fine so it isn't the install program. Downloaded the most recent exe driver file from Canon and tried that. Computer says I have the most recent drivers, but it still doesn't work because windows wants to install a driver every time I turn on the scanner.
