I found one solution that worked for me with my Epson 3200. I installed the free "XP Mode" from Microsoft that sets up a virtual PC running XP service pack 3. It worked like a charm for me on my Windows 7 Pro 64 bit system. The XP Mode setup requires at least Windows 7 Professional - it will not work on Windows 7 Home Premium.

XP Mode is indeed a very nice program. The downfall, as mentioned, is that you do have to have at least Pro to use it.

For those looking for it, you can get it here - Download Windows XP Mode

Side note - FrankP999, did you see this discussion here - Post your questions to the MSFT Virtualization team. Some really good info.

Thanks for the link to info on virtualization. I am pleasantly surprised how well XP Mode works for my scanner - it saved me $$ buying a new scanner.

I took a quick look at your photo site - you have some really nice black&white images. I have to dust off my Epson 2200 and get to work. I may contact you off list for help with my 2200.

The only problem I have with using Virtual PC is the fact that It only does 16-bit. I'm a photographer and need my scans done it a 32-bit environment. That's why I always recommend Vuescan over VPC.

For me though I got lucky as I found a work around solution to get my Nikon Scanner working under Windows 7 x64. My other option prior to that was to log into my XP hard drive on my system.

But I know others have limited options

Glad I was able to help.

    Later.

When I was looking for suitable drivers to hack for the 1640SU, I researched other scanners with both USB and SCSI because other than the communications, scanner drivers are pretty generic.

For the 3200 I'd look for other scanners that also have the USB/Firewire combo - if you are lucky that scanner uses the same chip or one similar enough. The PID for the 3200 can be found in the device manager, spend a little time in the device manager and I'm sure you'll figure it out. Following similar instructions to mine for the 1640SU, replace the x64 supported scanners PID with the 3200's PID and give it a try.

You might even try drivers written for scanners that only have USB, I think USB/Firewire combos don't convert from one to the other unlike USB/SCSI combos where USB always is converted to SCSI. I also think there are USB chips that are simply crippled USB/Firewire chips - identical except lacking the additional Firewire circuitry.

I was able to modify the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo driver to work with my 1640SU under Windows 7 x64.
Here's the driver: Epson America, Inc. - Downloading File Page

Open it with 7-Zip (or whatever you use), extract the file named _winzip_, extract the files contained in _winzip_ using 7-Zip (or whatever you use).
    .....
    Amazing!!

The Epson site gives little hope for a 64 bit driver ever, yet this seems to work perfectly. A couple of caveats:

At that url I did not find any file called "_winzip_" inside. Instead I found a directory structure which in turn contained 9 files named "Es27.inf". I simply modified all 9.

Device Manager now calls my 1640SU a "Perfection 2400".

Work perfectly ! Work also with the Automatic Document Feeder !

    Thank you very much!

Now go to the Device Manager, right click your scanner, Update Driver and Software...
Browse my computer..... and use the folder you extracted _winzip_ (with the now modified Es27.inf) to.

That should do it, worked great for me.
Although it shows up the Device Manager and the software think it's a 2400, it works and that is all that matters. Thanks a lot!
