Epson Perfection 1640SU - Driver Problem

    Hi Friends.

If i am not in the right sub-forum, then please move it to the correct position (thx)

I would like to keep my Epson Perfection 1640SU Scanner and therefore i would like to know how to install the proper driver. The Epson sites only provides an stone-old Vista 32 Bit driver. The driver installs without any message, and i even can select the Scanner in the Twain Menu in my Paint Program, but when pressing on the startbutton then comes "An error occures while trying to open the Data Source". Hardware Manager says "No Driver installed"....I'm gettin' mad...

I am using Windows 7 PRO - 64Bit (full, no RC) and need a little help from you.

    THX

I've just been to the site and expanded the vista 32 bit driver and it seems as though the driver is not a signed driver, and therefore wouldnt install on W7 64BIT OS you could try the Twain driver version 5.53A it seems to be a signed one - to make this possible you will have to install it in compatibility mode with xp otherwise it wont install, because of a OS mismatch, also note it says on the site the scanner has to be disconnected from the pc while installing the driver, anyhow to install the driver do the following :
To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.
Otherwise you will have to turn off signed driver checking which is not recommended - you can find instructions for this by typing something similar to this in the forum search .
I have just found out 32 bit drivers wont install on a 64 bit OS in any case

Same problem here... tried the suggested solution, but it didn't work... Should I dump my scanner now? Shouldn't I have been installing a 64bit OS at all? Seems the Windows world still isn't quite there, my MacBook works fine with 64bit OS

Edit: There is a solution, though it costs: VueScan from http://www.hamrick.com/
And to relativate the MACOS statement: I have to use the same there

    There is another option....

With the scanner connected, open Device Manager and right-click the Scanner/Unrecognised Device & select 'Uninstall'. Next, click the 'Scan for hardware changes' icon (magnifying glass) and when prompted, click to check automatically for updates.

This will search Windows Update for a possible driver and should work, it has for me with a very old scanner.

Just wait until windows 7 is officially released. Manufacturers are still working on drivers, they are added to windows update daily.
On friday I tried to install a 10 or 12 year old epson stylus color 600 printer. No way. Only the usb to parallel port adapter was recognized.
Yesterday I tried again, and was very surprised that windows found and downloaded the printer driver automatically.

I was able to modify the Epson Perfection 2400 Photo driver to work with my 1640SU under Windows 7 x64.
Here's the driver: Epson America, Inc. - Downloading File Page

Open it with 7-Zip (or whatever you use), extract the file named _winzip_, extract the files contained in _winzip_ using 7-Zip (or whatever you use).

Open Es27.inf and replace all instances of USB\VID_04B8&PID_011B with USB\VID_04B8&PID_010A and save and close the file.

Now go to the Device Manager, right click your scanner, Update Driver and Software...
Browse my computer..... and use the folder you extracted _winzip_ (with the now modified Es27.inf) to.

That should do it, worked great for me.

    Thanks!

Worked like a charm (I'll check out/setup the profiles later).
