How Do I Stop Generic Driver Installation

This laptop has Windows 7 Premium Installed.
I want to install a HD Audio Driver of my choice.

When I uninstall the Generic Windows 7 HD Audio Device Driver
The driver is automatically re-installed on restart.

Windows 7 Premium does not have GpEdit.msc installed.
An earlier version I came across (version 1.0 on the internet) has limited capability.

How do I prevent Windows Windows 7 from Automatically installing the driver?

Is there a registry entry I can edit to prevent installation of Generic Drivers or specific Generic Drivers i.e HD Audio Device Driver.

    Thanks In Advance

I would just install the driver of my choice. It will replace the generic driver.

    Hello pbcopter and pebbly

I have followed these methods already but windows 7 either re-installs the generic driver or reports that the best driver is currently installed.

Pebby, I've seen that link when searching for a solution.
It explains how to disable online update of drivers.
What it doesn't explain his how to stop Windows 7 from installing Genetic Local drivers.

Any further suggestion would be much appreciated.

    Thanks In advance

    Hello
I have managed to install the driver.
To successfully install it I uninstalled the current driver but did not restart avoiding
    re-installation of the Generic driver.

The laptop was originally an XP machine..... so

Then I right clicked the required driver package, selected properties and
checked the boxes to run the driver installation in
    1. XP SP3 Compatibility Mode
    2. Run as Administrator.

    Installation went fine after that.
All seems okay for the moment with respect to audio functions.
    Fingers Crossed!

    Thanks for the responses.

In those situations, a manual driver install usually solves the issue.
