Since Dell (?) is a partner with Microsoft then I highly recommend you go to the DELL Site, and download the drivers.

What are your specs? OS means nothing. Rather hard to assist when we actually know nothing about your system.
There are many versions of Windows 7. plz fill in your specs.

the dell site doesn't have any windows 7 nor vista drivers.

it seems you have an unsupported product.

some people report success with the default win 7 drivers on the install disc, or the xp drivers available at dell

    good luck!

    Dell - Windows 7 Center

wonder what that is, or where it leads.

Have you tried installing Windows 7 yet? Many of the drivers may already be there. If not, you could try here:
    Drivers & Downloads
It lists the available drivers for the 6000. If you look carefully under compatibility, some are Vista compatible (the SigmaTel audio drivers, for example). The XP drivers (some, at least) may install fine as they are or in XP compatibility mode.

Go to the same site as MICKEY MEGABYTE suggested - Drivers & Downloads=
These drivers might need to be installed in compatibility mode with XP if they wont install normally because of an OS mismatch (they are wriitten for XP so need to be installed in compatibility mode with XP) :
To install a driver OR program in compatibility mode - right click the setup.exe file - click properties - click compatibility - check run in compatibility with vista/xp etc - check run as administrator - leave the rest blank. Start setup.exe and install.

Then this will look even stranger....

The first two lines taken together shows that mickey is in fact correct. there is no support for Windows 7 for the Dell Inspiron 6000.

Furthermore, from the site that you linked to, there is a link that states "Will my computer work with Windows 7?" and links to Dell - Technical Support - where, you'll notice, that the only Inspiron laptops that will support Windows 7 (as listed by Dell) are the 1440, 1318, 1320, 1545, 1750, 1525, & 1526.

@All4mu - you can certainly try it out, but if you use this for a daily use, then you are probably better off just dual booting to see if you can play with the new OS and find drivers that you an try out. However, it sounds like you have already installed W7, and if so, anything that is not currently working will either need an updated river from *wherever* you can find it or else an older driver installed in compatibility mode, as mentioned above.

To further complicate which Dells support Windows 7....
The support matrix appears to be a work in progress or, probably more appropriately, created half-fast like many of Dell's documents. To wit, the matrix doesn't list my Mini 10v (Inspiron 1011) but in fact, they now offer Windows 7 drivers for it (and did prior to the date of the Technical Support Article):
    Mini 10v Drivers & Downloads

I wouldn't be surprised to see models added to the table, as more testing is done. Not necessarily the Inspiron 6000, but as the Article Summary says, "The tables below show the Dell systems that have been tested and are capable of running the Microsoft® Windows® 7 operating system." Capable is a term they have defined and is probably defined differently in different branches of the company.

My 8 year old Dimension 8100 desktop certainly isn't listed, but Windows 7 works well enough on it that it was worth scrounging up video and ethernet drivers to put it back in service as a backup......."back in service as a backup"......now that makes a lot of sense doesn't it?

So it may be worth looking for drivers that work or dual booting, as John suggests, to see how far you can get with it. Certainly, a lot of us are willing to help as much as possible.

We really need to start a dedicated Inspiron 6000 thread. Windows 7 works basically perfectly, but you do have to know a few tricks.

Sound: Install driver from Dell support page in XP compatability mode.

Function keys: Install Dell Quickset in XP compatability mode. The volume bar display will be stuck on full after you reboot. Deal with it. Use the volume icon in the task bar instead.

Video: Use Vista ATI drivers, either by upgrading from Vista or it would probably work to download them directly from Microsoft. Other drivers do "work" but this is the best I've found for x264 playback, though there's still a little tearing, which I think is just a problem with the driver.

Aero: A little too slow with 64MB card, not sure about 128MB. You can turn it off.

Networking: I seem to recall that maybe the wireless drivers aren't there, but if you connect via ethernet then they download from Windows update.

Touchpad: I think it basically works out of the box, but if you want the special functions you might need to download drivers. I tried the Dell drivers and Toshiba drivers. Everything seems to work, but there are different features.

I'm going from dim memory, but I think the only two things that need to be downloaded from the Dell website are the sound drivers and Quickset. And Quickset is optional, if you don't need the function keys it provides.
