    BIOS Update?


    Hi,

    I have a HP Pavilion dv6-2020ev. On the HP website to download drivers and updates for my laptop (Software & Driver Downloads HP Pavilion dv6-2020ev Entertainment Notebook PC - HP technical support (Middle East - English)), the latest BIOS update for my laptop it has listed is from November 2010 (WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (for Notebooks with Intel Processors) HP Pavilion dv6-2020ev Entertainment Notebook PC - HP technical support (Middle East - English).

    While checking the net, I found out that the latest HP BIOS for laptops is the 2.3.0.0 REV: A, which was released March 2011. (ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp52501-53000/sp52509.html). Under the supported laptops list, it includes the dv6 series (which I have). So I was wondering, is this BIOS update okay to install on my laptop even though it isn't listed on the HP website for drivers for my laptop?

    You have to have the EXACT Bios for your PC/laptop. Use only the bios from HP direct.
    Do not use a third party non HP bios.



    HP can use a specific auto installer to update Bios if and when necessary. So you may want to use the HP Update software.
    My old HP bios were updated twice by HP's updater.
    If this occurs it should work fine.
    If you want to do it sweet and easy find the HP Update software/download for your laptop.
    It may be installed but not running.
    Sorry not applicable to your model.

    If you are not having a problem that an updated Bios will fix you may just want to leave the Bios as is.
    Flashing the Bios can cause the computer to be permanently inoperable if an error occurs.

    Definitely only use the HP Bios specifically shown for your model.

    The BIOS is not 3rd party and I was just wondering because it lists dv6 under the supported models. If it lists dv6 though, why should it be bad to use it?

    SlasherIT, If it is working then don't flash the bios.
    Unless there is something in the bios update that fixes a problemt that you have.

    I have flashed the bios on several Dell machines using their bios update program and never had a problem.
    One caution, read the find documentation from the HP website about udating the bios and follow it to the T.

    If they wanted people to use it for your model it would be listed on the other page with all the other downloads for your model.

    It lists dv6 but which one?
    There are at least 20 different versions with different CPU's and graphics cards.

    Past models not included.

    Choose from the categorized results below

    The first one you found is the right one if you choose to update the Bios.
    (WinFlash for HP Notebook System BIOS (for Notebooks with Intel Processors) HP Pavilion dv6-2020ev Entertainment Notebook PC - HP technical support (Middle East - English).

    Though I recommend not doing so.

    even though it does list dv7-series compatibility... it may not apply to certain specific models that may include yours.... and for that reason it does not show up on the HP support website.... its better that you stick to the November update.

    Dell has posted this information for several years:

    If you are not experiencing problems on your computer and are not aware of any additional features in the BIOS that are needed, then you may not need to perform the update.

    NOTICE:
    If a BIOS update is not performed properly, it can actually harm your system. It is best to review the release notes to determine whether the update will benefit your system. Also, review the instructions that are included with the BIOS update software, prior to performing an update.

    Even though this is from Dell, I believe most (if not all) computer manufacturers follow the same logic. To put it another way, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
