I install windows, then install the driver disc that came with the motherboard, then I start doing updates.
With a pre sp1 disc, you will be updating for about an hour or two. If you have office installed, updates add another 30 minutes to an hour.

You have to keep manually checking for updates until there are no more.

I just built a pc for a client the other day and am about to box it up and deliver it shortly.

Oh, forgot to add, your Internet speed will affect the time it takes to install since all the updates I did on this machine was about 600MB. SP1 I think adds 350 more megs, bringing it up to around a gigabyte.
