I'm getting error code 28 when installing ethernet controller drivers

hi guys

i recently upgraded from "home premium x64 sp1" to "ultimate x64 sp1". i've installed majority of the drivers but the ethernet controller, which is now showing up under "other devices" in device manager, has the dreaded yellow exclamation mark infront of it.

i double clicked on it for more information and what i got was "the drivers for this device are not installed". right below that msg was a button to download the drivers. clicked on it and the msg that popped up was "windows was unable to install your ethernet controller".

googled the device id and found out it was "broadcom netlink(tm) gigabit ethernet v.12.4.0.3

i went to the broadcom site, couldn't find the exact version so downloaded an earlier version "v.12.1.59.01"

i've attempted several times to do the install but on all occassions, just after the wizard starts the installation, a msg will pop up alerting me to the fact that some files already essits in the location and whether to replace them with the new ones and i always select "yes". then midway through the install, this is the msg that pops up in the wizard....the wizard was interrupted before broadcom gigabit netlink controller could be completely installed".

this is what i've tried so far with my limited knowledge about these things:

1) went back to device manager, right clicked and uninstalled the device and then immediately attempted the installation again....no luck

2) started the system in safe mode, tried installion again, msg was....windows installer is not accessible in safe mode.

3) decided to do a sfc/scannow and at the end of it, this is what showed up:

"windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. details are included in the cbs.log windir\logs\cbs\cbs.log
c\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log

i followed the path to the log file and boy was i confused. i was totally out of my elements trying to interperate what i saw. but browsing through it i came across this portion listed below which i thought someone could probably take a look at and offer some suggestions. so here we go folks:

the reason i haven't mentioned doing a system restore is because all these is happening straight after downloading and installing a whole bunch of updates from microsoft including sp1. the thought of undoing all these really xxxxxxx me off. i'll be glad if there is a work around this.
many thanks in advance

btw, the full name of the controller is:

Broadcom NetLink(TM) Gigabit Ethernet
