How to Enable Scrolling on Dell Latitude D630 Touchpad?

    Hello all,

I recently installed Windows 7 x64 onto my Dell Latitude D630 and found that the scrolling with the touchpad does not work at all. I have already downloaded and installed the Synaptics driver and nothing happened. I also downloaded R165804.exe directly from Dell's site and it came up with an error saying that 'the software does not work on your operating system. Click OK to exit.'

    What now?

The Dell downloads do not show a touchpad driver for Vista 64 bit. Just the one you have which is listed for Vista 32 bit only.

Try installing that in a compatibility mode and see if that will help.

You can also post on the Dell laptop forum and maybe someone there will have something for you. Officially Dell does not support Win 7 on this model, although Vista drivers should work OK.

Compatibility mode didn't work so I guess I'll try the Dell forums. If it should work with the Vista drivers, I'm not sure why I'm still having problems.

    Hi,

You can download the Windows 7 x64 compatible Synaptic driver from the synaptic website. Click on the URL mentioned to download the compatible driver:http://www.synaptics.com/resources/drivers

Also, don't forget to go to 'mouse' in your control panel and enable the “scrolling”.

Kindly let me know for further clarifications.

    Thanks for your reply,

I installed the drivers and went back to 'mouse' in the control panel. However, I cannot find anything anywhere that says enable or scrolling. Where is it?

    Hi,

Follow the mentioned steps to get to the touchpad properties which should fix the issue: Click Start > Click Control Panel > Click Mouse > Click the Touchpad or Device Settings tab.

When you get the Touchpad tab option, click on the picture of the touchpad. Click Gestures Settings. After changing the options, click OK.

Under Touch Gestures settings, ensure that the appropriate check box is selected and that the window or item on which you have clicked is scrollable. If you still have problems, check your Scrolling Region settings.

If the scrolling regions are gray and cannot be adjusted, ensure that the scrolling feature is enabled. To enable scrolling:
    1. Select Scrolling in the menu tree to the left.
    2. Select the desired method of scrolling, and enable vertical or horizontal scrolling.

I very much appreciate your help and I'll do my best to help you help me. Saying that, I'm not seeing any Touchpad tab, nor do I see a Touchpad tab or picture.

Here's a link to pictures of all of the tabs under 'mouse' on my computer.

    Hi,

Sorry for late reply, seems like you are not able to access your touchpad settings. Did the touchpad Driver got installed successfully? If yes, it should reflect touchpad properties. I would suggest you to reinstall the driver and then shut down and restart your system. Kindly let me know if you are able to see the touchpad properties or not, after reinstallation.

I reinstalled the driver and restarted the system, and nothing changed. The only thing related to a touchpad that I see is under the 'Hardware' tab. It says 'Synaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad', and when double clicked, a properties window relating to the touchpad opens. After I click the 'Change Settings' button that has the yellow and blue run as admin shield, I see these tabs:

I don't know what else to do from here.
