latecomer's post #73 provides 2 links for performing a Windows 7 clean install, which is the route I now want to go given the failure thus far to get my built-in webcam to work.

In the tutorial provided by Brink, Step 1 says :

"Do a Clean Installation if:
Your computer has no operating system installed, or it’s running a version of Windows prior to Windows Vista with Service Pack 1 (including Windows XP).
You do NOT want to preserve your data, programs, or system drivers.
You want to delete your current operating system and replace it with Windows 7.
You want to create a multiboot system by installing Windows 7 on a separate hard disk partition."

Based on the fact that the product key label on my set of discs shows the following...

Win Vista HmPrm - Win 7 HmPrm UPG Fulfill

...I guess it's safe to conclude that step is not for me.

Which of the next 3 steps in the tutorial would be my best choice, then?

Thanks,

sbuxman

download as save, the ISO link. then burn it to a DVD. it will install a clean full version of win7 home premium when you enter the product key on bottom of your laptop. after install you can use your back up discs to reinstall your files.

Thank you...but I don't have a label on the bottom of my laptop. I have a label on the box that contained the 2 discs whose picture I attempted to upload. That box label does have a product key on it. The two discs are provided by Acer and are as follows:

Acer Upgrade DVD...contains Acer Upgrade Wizard and Applications, drivers for Windows 7

Microsoft Windows 7 Upgrade Media

To date, I've never owned a virgin copy of Win7 that was purchased at a retail outlet.

Looks like I'm on my way to Best Buy or Frys or Micro Center to purchase a copy?

ifyou buy one, you dont have to buy both discs, ask for a OEM System Builder Pack 32bit. i paid 99 bucks for home premium, pro was like 110.
frys did have the OEM System Builder Pack for 79 bucks. i went there to see how much the pro was and sales idiots wouldnt help me.

I don't trust what Acer originally provided me because I have no way of knowing if what's on the Microsoft disc is enough to install a wholly new OS. Having already tried it once, the result is Vista HP before running the App Disc, number 2.

I knew I'd have to spend close to $100.

i had nothing but problems with acer software, thats why i have win7 installed from the OEM SBP DVD. acers support techs only answer for any problem is factory default restore. when it came to taking 3 hours to install updates every time, time to install full version and do away with their software. im very glad i bought that DVD, my system boots up faster than it did with acers software. plus i have all the system tools that acer removed to keep us from repairing it.

it was may or june of 2009, acer sent me email saying, if i purchased the 5515 in may of 2009 or later, they would do a free upgrade to win7. if purchased before may 2009, we had to pay for upgrade at a price of 200 bucks. people that chosed to upgrade through them, got back a emachine e620 and not the aspire 5515. on acer support theres no drivers for win7 only XP and vista.

Understood, and I can relate first-hand to the frustration with their "techs."

Please explain to me as best you can what the diff is between a system builder pack and the norm, IOW Win7 full install disc(s).

system builder pack is just one DVD, its yours till you decide to sell your laptop. the retail version is yours but has to go with laptop when you sell, you pay way over a 100 bucks has both 32bit and 64bit. the ISO is all versions of win7 and uses your product key to install that version of win7.

I was OK up to the reference to the ISO file. I've tried more than twice over the past year or two to grasp the step-process creation of it and still never got it, and I feared that I'd see it raise its ugly head again. On two occasions I remember the need to create a CD or DVD from an iso file so I'd have my own copy of the Ultimate Boot Disk. Never worked. Looks like I'll have to put on my thinking cap again -- third time's a charm and I'm always willing to learn.
