What is the NIC (Network Interface Card) he is using?

Go to Start > Program and Files > Type "Device Manager" (without quotes) > Network Adapters

Please screenshot using: Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums

What was the previous operating system he was using?

Please note that there may not be drivers available for Windows 7

Sure...glad to help. I need the make and mode of the PC in question. With that information I can track down the needed drivers for you.

Post back the PC make and model as requested.

If it's home-built then tell us the make/model of the Ethernet or Wireless adapter. These may be listed in the Device Manager under Network adapters. Type Device Manager in Search box above the bottom-left Start button.

It's possible the driver was installed with Win7 and you only need to find the connection icon in the bottom right System tray row of icons, left click on it to connect to your network, or rightclick it to run Troubleshooter which will tell you exactly what's needed.
