I've been using various print drivers for various locations with success for a month with my new laptop. Today, all drivers gone. Loading new ones doesn't work. Print spooler is not "started;" it starts successfully, then is not "started" next time I look.

Other possibly relevant information: HP 1020, HP MX 340 at home office.

Tried: multiple restarts of print spooler, multiple reboots, troubleshooters, HP detect and download drivers

Hi,

I would suggest you can try doing System Restore to a date when your system was working fine. If you successfully restored your computer to a previous state, and the computer performs as expected, then Uninstall and reinstall the printer Driver and check the functionality of the printer.

If you are using windows 7 you can connect your USB printer by following few easy steps mentioned below:
  • Plug in the printer, and ensure that it's turned off. Also, set up the printer with ink and paper and all that other good stuff, according to the directions that came with the printer.
    [*]
Connect a USB cable to the printer and to your laptop.
    [*]Turn on the printer.
Since you're using a USB printer it installs software for you on its own. After the printer has been set up and recognized by Windows, you can either print or save some energy and turn the printer off.

If you're having trouble adding your printer, open the Control Panel and double-click the Printers or Printers and Faxes icon to display the list of printers available to your computer. The Add a Printer or Add Printer task can be clicked to run the Add Printer Wizard, which helps you complete the printer setup task.

You can even refer to the HP support URL mentioned for further troubleshooting: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/support-topics/printer-installation/printer-usb-troubleshooting.html

Thanks for responding. I ran a System Restore back to 9/23 at 0300.10 when things were find.
Current symptoms:
* At Administrative Tools / Services, Print Spooler Status is blank. I start it and it works, but then becomes blank again, next time in.
* At Devices and Printers several previous printers have disappeared altogether, the HP 1020 has dropped to being an unidentified device, the iPhone (4) is an unidentified device, and the Canon MX340 is showing as a printer but doesn't work.
* Symantec Endpoint Protection has a warning at Antivirus and Antispyware Protection. I have performed the quick scan, which found no problems. I have updated Symantec. Warning remains.

New thoughts?

Hi,

I would suggest you to follow below mentioned steps:

Step 1: Use Windows Explorer and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\spool\PRINTERS. After clicking on “PRINTERS” you will see lots of files. Delete only the files (temporary files) in the PRINTERS folder (but not the PRINTERS folder).
Step 2: Click START”, click “Run” andtype: net start spooler
The printer will get restore and should work normally again.

You can even try running the Printer spooler Fix: http://download.microsoft.com/download/E/2/3/E237A32D-E0A9-4863-B864-9E820C1C6F9A/MicrosoftFixit-portable.exe
