install hp3050 j610a fails on win 7 64 bit

Hi. I have a hp3050 wireless printer whose drivers i am trying to install on my dell win 7 professional 64 bit. I am trying to install using both the CD and from a download from the HP website. In both instances when I am asked to connect the printer to the laptop via USB printer cable, I connect them AND then the Win 7 automatically detects the printer and tries to install it again. At the same time my installation procedure reports that it cannot see the printer - i.e. I have not plugged in the printer cable. The windows 7 auto install reports that the device did not install properly. The installation procedure I was running seperately reports that my printer cable is not plugged in. If I check Printers and Devices I can see the printer but it is not fully installed, I need to reboot the laptop to remove it from devices - or I remove HP drivers via control panel. Help please cos I am going nuts....
- please note, I did install this printer a few months ago without any issue ( but I rarely printed from this laptop) - so i dont understand why today I am having these issues. I uninstalled the printer because it was crashing my laptop with the blue screen when I tried to print wirelessly, - it printed one or 2 pages and then killed the laptop.
I have the same printer connect to my windows XP laptop and it prints hunky dorey. I have disabled my fire wall and other security software. I am runing install as administrator.
