Windows 7: Atheros BlueTooth Suite Won't Uninstall

Same story

Just ran into the dreaded Atheros Bluetooth Suite problem when trying to upgrade to Windows 8 from win7. I had uninstalled it years ago -- the Start Menus folders were still there, but empty. Program folder still there in all its glory. So I unchecked the boxes in msconfig, rebooted, renamed the folder, ran through registry like a lunatic, looking for anything named Atheros and xing it. Rebooted. Freaking thing ignored my renaming and repopulated the registry keys! Anyone got an answer yet? You would be an international hero, because this story is ALL OVER THE NET with no solutions except to clean install, and I have no time for that.

PS If anyone has any idea what devices use these drivers, that might help me puzzle it out. THANKS, this board is a godsend!

What has finally seems to have worked for me was to use the old-free version of 'JV16' app and registry cleaner. There were still a few entries I had to remove by taking full ownership of the Keys, deleting them, then backing up the registry. I then turned off system restore so as to remove all the old points-rebooted into safe mode, then back into 'Unsafe' mode (Private joke!!haha) turned system restore back on and it has seemed to work. But what a PITA!!!!

Thanks, JerryBear! In desperation last night I unchecked the services in msconfig, rebooted, DELETED the Bluetooth Suite folder inside Programs x86 -- instead of simply renaming it -- rebooted again with the services still unchecked, and VOILA! The installer ran and I seem to have no problems. I'm thinking I should probably work through the registry now (after backing it up) and delete any key or folder named Atheros. Whaddya think? Or should I leave well enough alone?

BTW, FWIW, the upgrade was worth it just for the performance boost. I already have a 2600k, NVidia 560 and sata 6 SSD, but still am noticing faster loads on hogs like Dragon and QuickBooks. Enjoying the new toys too, except for the Metro Apps, which look a bit absurd on a 30-inch screen. I hope 8.5 can let me window and scale them, because I like some of them otherwise.

P.S. Going forward, I will flee screaming from any software bearing the Mark of Atheros.

Yes-I'd recommend browsing the registry- you'll be amazed at how much fluff is left in there---

Yes, doing it now and realize I should have clean-installed. The after-upgrade cleanups take just as long as reinstalling all my apps and starting from scratch. This is the first time I did NOT and probably the last!
