How to modify a Vista driver to install under Windows8

I have a laptop with a ATI X300 grapics card. Newest drivers are for Vista. When trying to install them manually Windows says the drivers are meant for an older version of Windows. The Microsoft driver makes the graphics really bad,

Any way to modify the .ini file of the drivers of something so Windows 8 will accept, "belive" it's Windows 8 drivers...?

If a program or driver written for an earlier version of Windows doesn't run properly in Windows 8, then you could try changing the compatibility mode settings for the program or driver to hopefully allow it to run properly in Windows 8 afterwards.

That was the first thing i tried. The driver is reported to work with w7 so it would probably work with w8 too if i just where allowed to install it.

NOT necessarily. I have an old tablet PC (XP era) whose Vista drivers worked fine in Win7 -- but MS removed the feature from Win8 that allows them to run. Thus, in Win8, the PC has to restort to generic Basic drivers.

Any way to override this restriction? The drivers are WDDM 1.0 so they should work...
They work in Windows 7 but are described as Vista drivers...

Do you guyes think MS will release more legacy compatible drivers through Windows Update as they reduced hardware compability with Windows8. Pretty stupid move IMO when they complain about small marked share for W8...
