Old Laptop, Windows 7 x64, ATI Mobility X1400 driver problems

    Hi guys,

I am new to this forum and i have come seeking your help.

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 with an ATI Mobility X1400 graphics cards which isnt being recognised now that i have installed Windows 7 x64, after doing some searching on here i see this is common problem. However, my problem doesnt seem to be covered.

As Dell dont support the card anymore because it is so old, i tried using a Vista x64 driver and updating it using the device manager, this did not work. I then tried the mod tool method found at Mobility Modder - ATI Version, Install the Latest Drivers on your ATI laptop and this worked, except there was one problem, my screen was no longer backlit. If i plugged in a second screen i had a display again and the X1400 was listed in the device manager instead of the Standard VGA, i also had aero capabilty and higher resolutions.

So in summary, i can get the driver updated and have higher resolutions and aero, but my screen goes black and can only be seen if i shine a light on it or i plug in a second screen.

    Any idea's??

    Thanks Guys

Nope, every time i successfully install a new driver the LCD Inverter stops working and my screen goes extremely dim. Changing the brightness settings has no affect, the only was i get a display is if i use a second monitor.

If you add Microsoft Update Catalog to your favorites and install the app, then do a search on "ATI X1400 driver".

Part way down the list of results, you will see driver version 7.14.10.8333. THAT is the version that the other thread said is the one that works.

Download and install that version (there are two entries, but I don't know which one you need).
