Windows updater keeps causing print spooler problems

My pc uses Win 7 64 bit. Problem is that is does not like printers. Every time it updates drivers i get the same problem: printer not working due to the spooler needing to be cleared. It sees the scanner but there is a yellow triangle next to the printer icon or, more recently no printer icon at all but still identifies spooler problems when I click 'find printer'). I found a fix on this site involving clearing some of the system32 files. This worked, and then on next reboot same problem. The printer is Epson XP-305 but its not the printer because i had the same happen with my Dell 1600N (in fact, i thought my 6 year old Dell was the problem which is why i bought the epson). I have windows updater switched off but it updates nevertheless with the same problem each time. I then have to restore to earlier setting. My PC is custom made, with 8GB RAM, NVidia GForce 450 graphic card, Gigabyte Z68AP-DŁ motherboard and i5-2400 3.10 GHz chips. I use Norton 360 Antivirus and IE8 browser.

Would be grateful for advice on a permenent fix which does not involve system restoring every day!
