C-Media AC97 Audio Device. This device cannot start. (Code 10).
Sound hardware on ASUS Mobo will not work after installing Windows 7. Latest drivers installed. Don't know what else to try?

If your PC is decktop or tower change sound card.
There must be another fix to replacing the onboard sound card. It was working fine before installing Windows 7.

Have you checked out C-Media Company Information and downloaded their drivers for Windows 7. They have beta ones for Windows 7.
I think 8738 drivers have generally been backward compatible with older models. I am going to try them out with my SIS onboard audio tonight. I have currently got the CMedia 5.12.01.0051 drivers working fine under Windows 7. I have also used the older SIS 7012 driver, but Windows 7 didn't know how to change the volume levels with this driver.
Windows 7 by default wrongly detects the onboard sound device as a Realtek AC97 adapter.

Just tried the drivers and they don't work with my C-Media device, however the 5.12.01.0051 do work fine and Windows 7 seems to be able to control the volume with them.
The file I got ages ago was called UDA051_build01_Logo51.3_Standard_.rar. I still have a copy of it. Googled a bit and found the URL - added below.

I have the C-Media AC97 Audio Device also and works fine on Win 7. All I had to do is change some settings.
If that's on-board, I'd get a soundcard - any half-decent current Soundblaster would do the job..
at least then you'd get some better drivers for it, and it would also relieve some of the stress on your CPU..
